It's World Backup Day! Don't Forget to Back Up Your Hard Drive!

world backup day 2011 march 31 Do you know what today is? No, it's not Friday (thanks, Rebecca Black fans, you can sit down now) ... it's World Backup Day!

If you haven't backed up the important data on your hard drive in a while, now is the time. You should also go back through your old backups and make sure they still work, 'cause nothing brings out a geek's tears like unexpected data loss.

If you want to learn more about how and why to back up your files, check out the official site of World Backup Day. This new semi-holiday is (not surprisingly) brought to you by a group of helpful Redditors. The internet really needs more geeky holidays, especially when they're as practical as this one!

Hi! Thanks for writing about World Backup Day!

How about a little history.
Last week a bunch of users on Reddit decided that there should be more awareness around backups and especially the upkeep of backup restores. This has resulted in designating March 31st as World Backup Day as a dig at April Fools. A fellow redditor helped design the website and we even managed to have snag some giveaways from CrashPlan, Backblaze, SpiderOak, & MiMedia to help spread the word.

The holiday is a play off of April Fools and to "preempt" any pranks or backup failures. Currently, the site is just a single page but will hopefully expand soon to be more comprehensive.
