Babies are always so mystified by the simplest things. Whether they are cracking up over ripping paper or they are like little five and a half month old Emerson here, shocked and then excited by his mommy blowing her nose.
Babies are great because they remind us to appreciate the simple things. They haven't been beaten down by mortgage payments, 10 hour work days, or the recession yet. All they have to worry about is when to giggle and when to poop, all the while getting regular naps. I could get used to that kind of life! This video is sure to go viral and will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face. He goes from terrified to doubled over with laughter in seconds. What a little cutie!

Actually, the laughter after wards is a stress response to the stimuli. He's not laughing at the blowing. He's scared and then relieving the tension through laughter.

I had the same thought. Yes, he is adorable and his laughter is sweet. But when I repeatedly saw the absolute terror and panic on his face, I felt terrible. If I saw my baby look terrified, I would not repeat the behavior over and over for kicks.

OMG are you serious? Do you lack the inability to laugh? Ohhhhhh the baby is so scared that is why he is cracking up right after.

I think you are exactly right. This little one is scared. Who really knows what the person is doing to make the baby react this way. I seriously doubt it is the blowing of the nose.

That baby was just conditioned to laugh when he is scared to death. Also, notice the defensive posture grow and he almost ended up laughing, albeit not as much as previously, as a method to cope. People don't want to see these kinds of things. It's easier just to laugh. I watched this to get a good laugh or at least smile. I wasn't looking for anything negative. I left with it though.

You are stupid. The baby is learning not to be afraid of
people blowing their nose. It's a baby becoming familiar with
life's surroundings.

This kid has a great personality - he is able to be terrified then relieved - learning about life in a very safe environment. When his mommy blows her nose - she is disappearing behind a handkerchief and his relief is obvious when she reappears - he is safe. If he were not able to deal with this, he would have lost control and screamed or cried hysterically. This is one cool human being. I would like to watch him grow up.

I have laughed until my head hurts. The baby being terrified is not funny, but the reaction afterwards is. This is one of those moments that even though it could be considered cruel, the baby needs to become accustomed to hearing a nose blown. Especially from someone he knows and loves. He's being prepared for the common experience of hearing a stranger blowing his nose. Can you imagine what his actions would be like, if he hadn't received "instruction" from mom?

This is how babies establish the necessary neurological wiring to calm themselves. His brain is learning how to regulate fear. Children who don't learn this become hypervigilent. They are in a constant state of nervousness. This is actually helpful to the baby.

So is Mom never to blow her nose again in the presence of Mommy? What happens if she suddenly sneezes?
