A British guide dog named Edward needed surgery to remove his eyes, leaving his owner, Graham Waspe, devastated. Fortunately, a new dog named Opal was up to the task of guiding both Graham and Edward. The two dogs have become fast friends, and they make presentations to local school groups together.
We've already seen a blind dog with his own guide dog, but a blind guide dog with his own guide dog ... well, that's pretty cool.
Update: The BBC has a touching video of the dogs. Is someone cutting onions in here? (Thanks, MeFi!)

Fair warning to ANYONE I that I see mistreating a dog or any helpless animal...I will immediately call the police and turn you in, including those of you who think it's alright to leave your poor scared animal locked up in your car while you "shop". I don't care if it's for "only one minute" or all day. I will turn you in immediately!

If the dog had cataracts (as one story said) or glaucoma (as another story said) why did they have to remove his eyes?
I have a dog that is blind due to cataracts and while he cannot see he still has his eyes.

I asked the same question. lWhy remove his eyes if he had cataracts?

I dont know specifically what this dog had- perhaps it was dry eye that couldnt be controlled or glaucoma that got out of hand... or perhaps he had a tumor on the optic nerve or something. Im sure they had a good reason for removing his eyes- the amount of time and money put into a guide dog is high.

I dont think it was cataracts because they can be removed and sight restored just like in humans. Enucleate the eyes for that? I dont think so.

Removing the eyes relieves the dogs pain. Dogs can have other eye problems when they have cataracts that will cause them pain. I believe this dog had Glaucoma. My dog has been blind for 4 years and is doing great. If you have a blind dog or a dog with eye problems go to blinddogs@yahoo. It's a great group!

My sister in law had a cataract removed and pain developed and they removed the eye. I guess the same for dogs.
