But you don't have to take my word for it: an amazing flowchart, "See Something, Cite Something," by webcomics artists Loldwell and Rosscott, makes the point more effectively.

I highly recommend consulting this chart before you repost anything cool online. It's a lot funnier and gentler than the other best way to learn about proper online citation: having your own stuff stolen without a link back. And hey, even if you're a creator-respecting saint of an internet citizen, you'll still probably find the flowchart amusing.
