We love our parents, we do, but sometimes there's a learning curve on certain technologies and it takes them a bit longer to master what's going on. Take cell phones, for instance. Texting is a relatively new concept, and unless you grew up with instant messaging, you might not understand exactly what it's for.
"
When Parents Text" is a single topic tumblr that allows people to submit goofy texts they get from their parents and then rate how funny they are. Think

Texting is childish nonsense--why not press a button and TALK to someone? Wow, what a concept!

hmmmmm....I'm 41 and quite the proficient texter! I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, I don't think that texting is "childish nonsense". I think texting is actually a great communication tool. I hate talking on the phone; I find it burdensome at times and a quick text can ask or answer a simple question without the need to engage in a conversation. My kids text me when they get home from school to let me know they arrived safely; this avoids a phone call to my office, but lets me know they are safe. We talk in person when I arrive at home.

I'm 62 and I also am a proficient texter. I have two grown children with whom I text regularly, as well as other family and friends, and NONE of my texts will ever appear in an article like this.
I can think of three situations in which texting is better than talking. The first is in a crowded, noisy place such as a sports stadium or at an amusement park where hearing on even the best cellphone is nearly impossible. The second, as "Nunya" said, is when I want to ask a quick question, confirm a meet-up time or some other short, simple communication that doesn't warrant a conversation. The third is when privacy is important. I get tired of hearing other people's cellphone conversations and often wonder whether they could get the same information across texting instead.
Besides, I despise talking on the phone, and anybody who knows me knows I'd rather email, text or IM instead. To each his own, I suppose...

Dear Editors:
Please delete all this spam! I just "reported" every one of them to you for "review". Actual commenters shouldn't have to wade through all this crap to get to real comments. Furthermore, with all the fancy-schmancy technology available to prevent spam on comment boards, these ads should never appear in the first place. If you need a model, consult the LA Times website. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the feedback! Reporting spam comments actually helps a lot as it call our attention to delete them quicker, so thanks for that!
Our blog overlords are always on the lookout for new ways to block spammers because as fancy technologies come up, spammers find new ways around it -- though admittedly our comment system is in no way fancy in the first place :)
Regardless, thanks for commenting and reading!
