When the internet starts to feel overwhelmed by trolls and same-old-same-old memes, it's nice to know that there are heroes out there to inspire us and restore our faith in what a web celebrity can be. Whether making bold moves, overcoming great odds, or simply being very, very good looking, these folks made us smile every time their faces popped up in another blog post, and made us want to make better internet. Here are the nominees for Hero of the Year:
Jenny The Whiteboard HOPA and The Chive
Jenny may have turned out to be a hoax by The Chive, but this gutsy woman was applauded by many for fighting back against a leering boss who called her a HOPA (a misspelled acronym for "hot piece of ass"). Instead of letting him get away with it, she spelled out the whole story on a dry-erase board -- including her boss' habit of playing FarmVille like it's a full time job -- and sent it around her office to announce she was quitting. Jenny wasn't real, but the sentiment struck a nerve on the internet, and launched the career of Elise Porterfield, the woman who played Jenny. And major props to The Chive for successfully trolling the internet in a fun way.
Jimmy McMillan (of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party)
Jimmy McMillan ran for governor of New York with a platform everybody except sleazebag slumlords can agree on: The Rent Is Too Damn High! He may have lost the race, but his fight to make housing affordable for the working class puts him firmly in hero territory. Well, that and his incredible beard, his music and the interview (and musical performance) he did with Urlesque.
Old Spice Guy: men (and women) want to be him, and women (and men) want to be with him. The appeal of great-smelling Old Spice spokesperson Isaiah Mustafa and Old Spice's brillant viral blitz knows no bounds. His smile, his witty quips, and his amazing physique were the envy of ... well, everyone, in 2010. But he's just so damned likable that it's hard to begrudge him for being perfect. He just makes us want to laugh at his great YouTube videos (and maybe hit the gym a little harder next month). Plus: he's on a horse!
If you've ever wanted to quit your job in the most bombastic fashion possible, you understand why Steven Slater is a hero to so many. This former JetBlue flight attendant grabbed a couple of beers, yelled some swears, and jumped off a frickin' plane using the inflatable escape slide. His career since then hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, but Steven Slater is still synonymous with standing up to jerky customers and leaving a terrible job behind.
Although comedian and dude with cerebral palsy Zach Anner didn't end up winning his own TV show in an Oprah contest, he did impress basically the entire internet with his charm and humor. Having cerebral palsy -- the sexiest of the palsies -- hasn't stopped Zach from living a kickass life and creating his own travel show. Even Oprah can't stop this hero, who says he's wheeled slowly away from three different explosions without looking back.
Honorable Mention: Antoine Dodson
