Animal of the Year! It's the category every cat lover has been waiting for! But, come on, cat fans. We already gave you Catfight, the tournament that determined the internet's greatest feline, so we thought it was only fair to have a category that embraces all animals. Even if that means embracing the eight arms of Paul the Octopus (RIP, buddy. You were a real champion.)
So, fans of cats, dogs, and octopi alike, here's your chance to determine which famous web animal deserves an Urly award as Animal of the Year. Plus, click here to find out how you can win a 2011 I Can Has Cheezburger Calendar just for voting and commenting below.
Birthday Dog
Representing for all of dog-kind is Riley, the famous Birthday Dog who became known for wearing a party hat and looking stoned at his first birthday party. Riley and his owner went on the Today Show to clarify that the dog was not, in fact, under the influence of any illicit substances. Still, Birthday Dog is the go-to meme for expressing the sentiment, "Whooooa. Dude."
iPad Cat
The iPad is so easy a cat can do it! Well, okay ... ONE cat can do it. He's iPad Cat, and he probably had one of Apple's cool new tablets before you did (and 6.9 million YouTube videos, to boot). Will the cute cat who's an expert at using the year's trendiest device also turn out to be the year's best animal? Watch his little paws work that yarn app, and decide for yourself.
OMG Cat
O. M. G. There's really nothing else to say. This cat stole our hearts with his perfect expression of surprise, and we enjoyed speculating about what OMG cat might have been surprised by. This year has been a strange and surprising one for many around the world, and OMG Cat sums up the feelings of a generation with one gaping expression.
Paul the Octopus (Pulpo Paul)
The World Cup may be long over, but people still talk about Paul the Octopus, the wondrous cephalopod who successfully predicted winners in 8 out of 8 World Cup matches. Paul then moved to an aquarium in Spain, the winning country, where he was adored by crowds of visitors.
You may have caught Parry Gripp's adorable song, 'Paul the Octopus, We Love You.' Well, that pretty much sums up how people felt about ol' Paul. Unfortunately, Paul passed away in his aquarium a few months later, proving the old poetic saying that nothing gold with eight arms can stay. The internet still misses him, and it'll be hard to find a replacement prognosticator when the World Cup comes around again.

Paul of course. Why? Because cats and dogs get enough credit, it's about time we give the proper love to the octipods!

Birthday Dog (Riley) of course! Look at him, living in the moment. He loves his cake, hat, party decor, and taking a picture. He is my 2010.

Gotta be Paul - he's the smartest & best looking of the bunch, plus it's postumous so we don't have to see him again.
