Comedian Kristen Schaal tweeted a couple of videos on Saturday morning highlighting some cringe-worthy product placement from Days of Our Lives.
The Twitter tag #soapoperaproductplacement is now blowing up. Favorite entries include "Bad news, Hope is in a coma. Now she'll never get to experience the delicious flavor of Pepperoni Bagel Bites," and "She's been sleeping with your brother on your Tempur-pedic sleep number bed."
Boy I can't wait to be a screenwriter so I can come up with outside-the-box, value-added solutions to consumer awareness challenges.
After the jump, some of the more intellectually insulting product placement clips.

So where have YOU been? This has been going on for over six months! The best one is the Midol plug. Couldn't believe it when I first saw it. Maybe they could a crossover with a classic SNL spot and talk about "painful rectal itch."

I cringed when I saw the Midol one. I was like...WHAT??? I think they're doing commercials in the shows now, because people record the shows on their DVRs and zoom through the commercials. They figure we'll watch the show, and see their product and hear the plug this way.

I mean really, who cares what they use in T.V. shows? Who really cares that they have Cherios or Chex Mix. Who really cares?

Well, they did that this summer on Degrassi: The Boiling Point, which was a daily event, but they used Zeno Hotspot after showing those Whitney Port ads on TeenNick for acne medication. In case you didn't know, Degrassi (formerly Degrassi: The Next Generation)is a Canadian teen serial soap opera series aired on TeenNick on Friday nights at 9:00 P.M. about a group of kids and adults from Toronto, Ontario living on or near the real De Grassi street and attending the fictional school, Degrassi Community School (7th grade through senior year). It focuses on them going through real-life issues like sexuality, relationships, cheating and academic stress. It is just as good as Days, a bit better than OLTL, but MUCH better than the B&B, The Young and the Restless, All My Children and General Hospital. Catch it sometime. Currently, the soap is on its 10th season with an event known as The Breaking Point.

I was actually thinking of the Zeno moment with Fiona and Holly J when I clicked this post. I agree with everything you said, but the current event isn't known as The Breaking Point, it's just Degrassi Season 10. The fall finale is this Friday, and the show will be resuming with new episodes in February.

@sara oh really? i heard a rumor it was The Breaking Point. But can't wait for the last episode of fall! I really hope that Jenna doesn't get with Sav! Also, I remember the Wanchai Ferry episode. And Chexmix was my first episode!

They have to pay for the show somehow. I think it's kinda creative and a little fun.

I can understand being a little more commercial to stay on the air, but they need better writers....or actors! These scenes are way too awkward and shouldn't be.

It's been a while since I watched soap operas (or TV for that matter - I watch just about everything via Hulu now), but I seem to remember that there are these things called commercials. Those are supposed to be what pays for the shows. Or are commercials gone now? If they're not, I can't see why these painfully obvious product placements are necessary. They could at least scale them back - instead of having people sit there and unnaturally talk about the health benefits of Cheerios, they could instead have them just sitting there and eating Cheerios while talking about show-related stuff.

"I can understand being a little more commercial to stay on the air, but they need better writers....or actors! These scenes are way too awkward and shouldn't be." -- Exactly! There's nothing wrong with product placement so long as it's done in a way that does not divert attention from the flow of the story. How it's done on these spots in the middle of a television program is not only cringe-inducing but is very distracting and adds virtually nothing to the story. Egregious product placement is about as bad as deliberate attempts to cover up branding in a way that would never be done realistically.

Now that's REALLY acting when you can pull off one these stupid scenes without cracking a smile. This is product placement gone postal. If I were a soap watcher I'd be insulted.

Nobody did it better (i.e. obvious) than Guiding Light during their last few years. They repeatedly plugged Pringles.

And i remember Lizzy Spaulding fed her dog Iams! I think the product placements are fine (with the exception of that Midol one, I mean it seems soooooo out of place). Soaps need to find new ways to plug commercials to stay on air. I'll take that insipid Melanie eating Cheerios if it keeps Days on air!

you'd think with all the in show spots they could give us a break on the 10 min. long commercial segments. It's not an hour long show anymore, It's more than half commercials. Where do you draw the line?
