Amy Krouse Rosenthal attached one hundred dollar bills (that's one hundred singles) to a tree on a Chicago street, each bill stamped with a message like "Don't ask, just enjoy!" and "Some things just can't be explained."
In a sort of precious, optimistic social experiment that isn't an ABC News fluff piece hosted by a guy who might be a demon, Rosenthal (with the help of her friends Brian and Ben) kept a camera focused on The Money Tree, curious to see just how Chicagoans would react to the very literal sight of money growing on trees.
The results may surprise you and make you happy that we're not all greedy, money-hungry beasts lugging around sacks of coins and bills marked with a "$" sign. At least, that's how it works in the Windy City, it seems.

I think if it was me, I would not have touched it because I could not have read the "enjoy" note without touching it and therefore, if I did touch it I would be contemplating stealing it, which I wouldn't do.

For the last 15 years it seems every time I get something going it collapses. 168K in school debt because I did right thing and blew whistle on crooked employer only to be hung out to dry by the state board. work two part time jobs because employers aren't hiring full time. Divorce due in part to financial stress. Crooked politicians taking care of rich abandoning those who struggle. I battle hard but seem to be loosing and becoming extremely synical about corporate America turning us all into endentured servants as they get richer. I cried as I watched. Don't know whether I should thank you for giving me hope or curse you for lifting me up so I can fall back down into defeatism again. The older I get the more of a yoyo life seems to be. Its a shame that it is those with the least who help each other out and those with the most try their hardest to not spread the wealth to their employees who got them their. How much damn money do they need to be comfortable! I think I will thank you!

I think it's great that someone would be so generous as to offer "free" money to the people in Chicago during this economic disaster. And, I'm greatly surprised that more people didn't stop, look, or even take more. Here's a thought: come to Akron, OH and see what happens to that tree.

I thought that was awesome of you guys!! What a great thing to do! I guess it goes to show you there are good people in this world!! What happened to the rest of the money? Did you finally just tell people to take it or leave it? Maybe they thought it was a candid camera moment. haha Good for you! Debbie.

Seriously, most of us are on to the gimicks. We'd think "Okay, another stunt by some TV show trying to find anything new to put on air" At least that would be my thought. Others probably thought the bills were fake and most didn't even notice. I wouldn't touch the money cause I don't steal either. This is just stupid. Thanks again AOL.
Still another 5 minutes of my life wasted I'll never get back...Oh well.

The money tree. Interesting but wrong neighborhood. Take it to Santa Ana, Orange County, downtown skidrow, or South Central, L.A. here in California. You would produce some greedy results.

The surprising thing for me was to see people walk by & never notice a tree with money hanging on it!! I'm sure most people that saw the money, immediately thought "what kind of prank is this? Look at this phony money!!" Even when they pulled off a couple of bills, it was probably to show their fam/friends & laugh about it. I know if it was me, I would immediately think its phony.

I was waiting to see if someone would add a dollar to the tree out of kindness, nest experiment would be to add blank sticky notes and a pen with some extra paper clips and see if anyone gets the hint.

Wow! this was great and you are right most people no see their "money tree". It would have been great to see someone else add a dollar. This has inspired me to do something for someone today...

I agree with Tigerlily.
In addition, for obvious reasons, there's a sense of humiliation reaching into a tree grabbing dollar bills. I bet if they had tried a location a little closer to poverty, you'd see a much different result.

I wonder how different the results would have been if their were larger denominations of bills. Would I take more than one penny? One "$1" bill? What if it was $10? $20? ... when would people notice and/or get more greedy?

I would have seen the free money tree because I observe things around me from the ground and up. I would have taken the money. I'm in a bad place right now, laid off and receiving unemployment benefits that's not enough to pay my rent and utilities, plus I'm raising my 16 year old grandson. I've always worked. As soon as employers get the applications and see dob 1951, they won't call for a interview and all my friends my age are feeling the same thing. It's a damn shame because we want to work, but can't get jobs! So any money we get we're grateful!

Amy - I was surprised also at the reactions - never would have guessed. Comment on your video - really nicely produced, great music, great cations... however, you leave us with no resolution. It would be nice to hear (or read) how long you sat there pateintly waiting for some nice greedy person, what finally happened - did you have to finally go take your money down?

Well Tigerlily; you just wasted you VALUABLE time on writing not one, but TWO comments on how lame you think this is. Who's the "lame one"? Methinks it's you.

What a great experiment. How sad that so many missed what was really happening. If you look closely, some looked for the message on the bill before they chose. I like to imagine that's because they just wanted to share the story with someone and have the proof to back it up. The biggest thing missed even by the makers, it that for a moment on an average day, this made perfect strangers smile and even had a few chat with one another. That is priceless. Sure some commenters above mention hardship areas where one would find more greed. That isn't greed, that's need. The experiment was to see if in areas where there isn't need would there be greed. Look again. Almost no one took took more than one and again just for the memory and the story. Yay humanity. Great work!
