On Friday I told you about 4chan's efforts to wish WWII Vet WIlliam Lashua a happy 90th birthday after this birthday invitation was posted to the online image board.
Well, he had his party on Saturday, and a few users from 4chan and Reddit (a much better-behaved website and community whose readers enjoy the more palatable memes from 4chan) showed up to party with Willy. There were also tons of cards and other gifts sent from strangers all over the big, wide internet. It appears that a fun time was had by all.
Read on for photos of the party, some commentary from William's grandson and a video commemorating the event.
First, a YouTube video featuring the highlights of the party along with shots of some of the cards folks from all over the world sent to the Ashburnham VFW, where the party was held. (Warning: Contains profanity)
Look at all this delicious beef jerky! Happy 90th birthday, young man! From your friends at reddit.com.

According to William's grandson, the old man doesn't have any teeth, so another user jokingly(?) claimed that he'd be sending a blender and bendy straws.
Here's a giant card (from William's real family):

Apparently he can still chew fried chicken...

These girls are from the internet, William. Be careful.

These cards came in from all over the world.

William chilling with some musicians.

A talented Canadian cartoonist sent this gem.

Here are some flowers sent to William. The note reads: "Happy Birthday William! Thank you so much for your service to our country. I hope you have a wonderful day, Liz in Ohio."

Here is William with Reddit user Yiseowl and his friends.

And here's Yiseowl with William's grandson, who is also a member of Reddit.

One blogger called the American Legion and confirmed the following heartwarming statistics:
I called the Legion. And now, my favorite quote from the whole event:
His grandson got on the phone
50 Bouqets of Flowers
20 Cakes
Countless cards.
He said 5 UPS have pulled up today with stuff for him.
They also said the local Postal Mail had 2 trucks full of cards.
I almost cried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He told me to pass along to Anonymous a
"Thank You"
And let me say once again how absolutely wonderful William himself was. I'll go on the record as saying he was the greatest old person I've ever met. At 90 they told me that he lives on his own, still chops his own wood, and he was joking with me the whole night. He was busting balls with all the young kids and even flipped off the camera with a smile on his gummy face in a few photos. The man is my hero just for being awesome."D'awww! I'm happy to hear it confirmed that William is anything but a lonely old friendless geezer. His grandson reported that he's got a huge loving family and that the original poster used to advertise his party was meant to alert William's existing friends and family.
Here is video from the Lashua family thanking all the people who sent their birthday wishes:
It's always nice to see these sorts of stories pop up. 4chan was once called an "Internet Hate Machine" by Fox News. Sure, they're still responsible for a lot of heinous stuff, but at least there's a bit of warmth in their withered collective heart.

This was such a nice thing to do. People still do care out here in the world, which is great. And yes 1:50-1:53 caught me off guard. It was funny though.

I think as I read it, the son found out about the internet calling and asked people not to come in person or send strippers or anything crazy because it was a small lodge. He did welcome birthday cards.
I would assume the middle finger was recorded but taken out of context. I doubt he was expecting strippers =P
Just a guess but, that video was probably put together by a 4chan'er who may not have even been there.
Good Show!

FINALLY, an internet site being used in a responsible, mature, KIND, DECENT, caring and sensitive manner. I am SO glad that the "garbage" out there in cyberworld that usually crawls out of the woodwork didn't find a way to ruin it for this dear sweet man. After all, we have no idea how many more birthdays this man may have and every one he has now should be made special. Even though in today's world we see people living much longer than they used to, 90 STILL is a great achievement, especially not being an invalid in a nursing home. You know us younger kids (I'm 49) have no idea of the childhoods many of these people had many years ago. It was a very different world. Even very ordinary children didn't have all the treats and things we take for granted today. My own GREAT-grandfather was raised Mennonite. That means, especially at the turn of the 20th century, a VERY austere, simple and plain life. Many years later, after my DEAR SWEET great-grandmother had passed away and us kids are grown, I'm away in college and my mother decides one Easter to fix him an Easter basket. When she gave it to him he cried. He must have been close to 90 years old and he said it was the FIRST Easter basket he had EVER received in his life. Remember, the Mennonites didn't do things like this. And even though he married someone from the Lutheran church, it never occurred to anyone to give the adults Easter baskets. So we never know when these small gestures of kindness can make a HUGE difference in someone's life. Every year after that we ALL made sure he received items for EVERY holiday. Santa came to see him, he always got an Easter basket, Valentines, Halloween pumpkins, EVERYTHING. Remember, our older family members are not leftover people just sitting around to die. They are STILL vibrant, productive, USEFUL members of our society. Just one senior usually has more wisdom and value than an entire room of teenagers. So don't forget about these wonderful members of our lives still out there. And NEVER EVER abuse them in any way. My mother works in nursing at a nursing home. Folks, the abuse that goes on, even in ones like her's that are suppose to be among the best, would make most of you hurl your dinner. ALL sorts of abuse. And guess what folks, it's usually the younger people who have NO respect for them that physically abuse, steal, hit, everything you can think of. I even know of a VERY elderly old man who had a teddy bear that was worn thin from him petting it with love and some CREEP actually STOLE that grubby old bear of his. I personally wouldn't want to be that person when they have to stand before God one day and justify how they did THAT deed in life. My mother bought him a new teddy bear. But of course, it wasn't the same and it's the principal of the thing. I can't imagine being that low in life. That was a deed that was done JUST to be mean. You know it wasn't for drug money. So that's why I'm going on and on here tonight about how WONDERFUL it is what all of you kind sweet folks did for William. Hopefully he will have MANY more happy days AND birthdays before him yet.

I belong to the American Legion Riders group and once in awhile during some of the rides we will get old WW 2 vets who show up and I always make sure to talk to them cause some of us get too busy just doing the ride. Awesome people with some great stories.
The other day I was at a ballgame for the Dbacks and I was surprised to see that the Dbacks employs so many older people, and I am talking 90 years old! I got to talking to one old gal that was guarding one of the exits and she was 89 years old and had worked at the Dbacks stadium for 13 years. So she started work when so many others are ending work.
What a great day and memory for this guy!
