Press pause on the cat videos -- it's time for a journey through the internet's artistically viable pastures with Best of the Week on Vimeo!
We've got another computer animated video from the geniuses at Ringling College of Art and Design, a speed-tutorial in rhythmic shoe-making and a sleek font that will make design nerds weep Helvetica tears in their not-so-comfortable but very modern-looking armchairs.
The Monk and the Monkey by Brendan Carroll and Francesco Giroldini
In this lively, impressive short by Ringling College of Art and Design students (see one from last week here), a monk sends his student Ragu to find a special tree -- and while he waits for its sacred fruit to fall, you can contemplate what a task it must be to animate realistic-looking man nipples.
There is a minimum of two things you will like about this video: 1. It's one of those compositions where the sounds of every day actions build up into a rhythm, 2. You get to see how shoes are made.
This minute-long clip shows an animated font called Moshun in motion, and even though you know what's coming next (because, you know, it's the alphabet), it's still cool to see each letter take form in movements that are as varied as they are swift and clean. I imagine it's like a brain massage for typography die-hards.

i went to ringling college of art and design for photography, i was only there one semester... the school completely sucks unless you went for graphic design. majority of the staff is previous students, which freaked me out.
but i knew brendan carroll. for all the transfer students, they stuck us in this crappy building about 2 blocks from the school and other dorms. he was a nice guy with some wicked talent. i'm glad he is getting some recognition for his talent.
