They're useless in the best sense of the word, doing things you would never need done, in a way you'd never imagine to do them, for no other reason than to perplex and amuse you. You're useless...and we love you for it.

Brilliant!!
As an artist and designer I look upon these 'useless' machines as sculptural art pieces, live happenings of creative doodling.
Ergo, they are wonderful examples of the fucundity of the human mind...the tool making mind...the mind of creativity.

Makes me wonder what can be accomplished by the focused mind. As the one post said, they are works of art, but really are useless in the practical world. Pedal shoes? Looks like roller skates with old fashioned baby buggy wheels.

This is an impressive list of machines, but I have to agree with Iguana. To not include "The Most Useless Machine EVER!" in a list of useless machines seems to be an oversight.
The video in question has over 3.5 million views, which is an order of magnitude beyond any of the videos listed above.
Also, it was voted 'Robot of the Year' by engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/22/the-winners-of-the-2009-engadget-awards/
It has even made an appearance on The Colbert Report, and has been featured in Make Magazine.
In fact, one of the machines you do list (the most useful machine) was inspired by the Useless Machine.
Cheers,
brett@saskview
PS: there some conflict of interest on my part, as I'm the guy responsible for creating the video in question.

You forgot the invention that turns itself off when you turn it on.
