Soap bubbles never get old. They're exhilarating to pop when you're a kid, beautiful to watch when you're an adult and twee to play with when you're Zooey Deschanel. But how do they work?
I turned to Old Man Wikipedia for a physics lesson.
Well, that ought to give you something to think about as you enjoy the ten videos of absolutely gigantic bubbles after the break. They're packed with special Marangoni effects!A soap bubble can exist because the surface layer of a liquid (usually water) has a certain surface tension. A common misconception is that soap increases the water's surface tension. Soap actually does the opposite, decreasing it to approximately one third the surface tension of pure water. Soap does not strengthen bubbles, it stabilizes them via an action known as the Marangoni Effect.
Here's the incredible Bubble Man on Stinson Beach. I'm starting to believe he's some kind of man-angel from a children's book:
Here, it looks like a little kid manages to run inside a gigantic superbubble on the beach in Newport, OR:
The same family goes for it again -- they say the Guinness World Record for largest free-floating bubble is 5.86 feet in diameter and that this one breaks it:
Here's a guy named Dino trying his hand at it. Turns out his aim is good enough to nail his cameraperson twice:
Here's a man just makin' crazy bubbles right beside traffic in Fairfax, CA. It's a potential free car wash for someone...
Here's a whole bunch of slightly-smaller-but-still-very-big bubbles blown against an awesome rainbow backdrop:
Here's a bubble artist named Keith Johnson who specializes in making torus shapes. (FYI, a torus is "a surface or solid formed by rotating a closed curve around a line that lies in the same plane but does not intersect it." Cool.)
Here's a man in the woods "bubbling," as the pros call it. This clip has a pretty epic view of the first one popping -- it looks like slow motion but it isn't.
Here's the Bubble Thing, a device which supposedly makes the "world's biggest bubbles":

Hi all..
The bubblething is junk! I ordered it and it performed worse than the simple tri-string I made from butcher string. Make your own wand and get better results...PROMISE!

To all,
Please tell me more on how to make bubble wands. Can old fishing rods work?
I did use the bubble thing off of a dock in Long Port, NJ during the evening & The reflected light from the dock lights caused colorful beautiful inner sparks within the bubbles. It was as if fire flies of of day glow colours danced with in them. It was so exciting! Could't get a pic but beleave me it was heaven's beauty in a bubble.

"I'm forever blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air..." And it's true. I always keep one of those tiny bubble bottles in the car and I have a victorian bubble bottle (that one can wear around the neck) that I keep in my purse. Blowing bubbles is better than getting angry (at another person), whether in the car in traffic, or just hanging around. When yer blowing bubbles, ppl seldom take offense or become angry; it changes the vibe of the situation. Bubbles are so benign. Wonderful!

So you think people can't just "have fun?" Must we all spend every waking hour "at work?" What they are doing is not violating any law, isn't causing anyone any danger, is not unethical, it's non-polluting.... Perhaps you should try doing this; it sounds like you need a little something to take the edge off.

It's so much fun, especially when one sees the smiles from not only children but also old hoots. In all of 15 minutes one can change how they and others see the space around them.

Dear Debi,
Sorry for your loss, it's a tough emotional experience to go through.
I think your deceased love one would be happy for you to make some big bubbles & enjoy them.
The easy do is to google ( KLUTZ.com) ( The unblelievable bubble book by John Cassidy) & find out if there is a store near you that sells the big bubble wand. $15-20 bucks will get you started. You can also google teaching stratagies & sign in as a student for free info.
Next step / wrap cotton cord around a wire hanger bent into a circle. Hint I use dollar store bubble mix & add some liq. dish soap to it. I also hose the area with water if it's very dry outside.
