We have a lot of cool things in this country (Canada, j/k, The United States), but as far as I know, giant humanoid robots in our city centers isn't one of them. If you're looking for some giant urban robot action, not surprisingly you'll have to head East a bit, over to Japan. Or you can just watch darwinfish105's cinematic and ominous time-lapse of a the goings on of a giant, 60-foot tall Gundam in the Japanese city of Shizuoka.

I hate to be the one who tells you this, but your timing on the Gundam article is way off.
The statue was first assembled in another Japanese city last year as part of an anniversary celebration for the original Gundam franchise, and there has been videos of not only its assembly but also it working (the head turns and 'steam' comes out of certain parts along with sound effects) floating around the web ever since.
Try checking out the archives at Anime News Network's site for the ORIGINAL news articles about it, or YouTube for the first videos.

Actually, they built a new one holding the sword which just went up last month, so this article is not THAT late.

You're right, tangilct, that there is going to be a completely new statue, but according to the other articles I've read it's going to be put up at another location, and the last article I read about it said it's still being made and not supposed to be assembled for a while yet.
Unless the other articles were totally wrong or I somehow misread them, the only thing new about the statue in question is the original hand was switched out for one holding a beam saber and one of the handles was removed from the back.
