Fishing is a peaceful sport -- unless you're trying to catch the huge monsters that live deep in the ocean or in mud tunnels at the bottoms of lakes. Then it can become exhilarating and sometimes scary. We've never even seen parts of the earth's epic oceans and if this is what we're turning up now... Who knows what lies beneath? Here are 31 enormous fish from around the world.
Someone's making a sexy face (hint: it's not the fish).

Dear Jennifer,
I beg to disagree...YOU have missed a substantial part of my point. I don't know how California Fish & Game allocates license fees, but here in Michigan, only a very small percentage
of those fees go directly for enforcement of Fish & Game laws...the majority of fees go for programs like our fish hatcheries, hunter education, controlled burns to enhance wildlife habitat, and other programs that directly enhance our resources. Oh, by the way...did I mention that I am a wildland firefighter and a member of my local volunteer fire department.
Yes...I am one of those people who RISK MY ASS to protect YOUR cutesy little vacation home in the wildland-urban interface. Talk about high horse...it's people like you and your back-to-nature in high probability wildfire areas that are THE biggest
FIRE HAZARD...How many more of us will get hurt or die defending properties of arrogant, clueless people like you?

Some of your people are freaking tree-hugging idiots. You have to keep fish sometimes to conserve them. If you let the population get to big in some places it causes health issues for the fish. I fish and I hunt, most of the fish I catch I release. There are very few that I do keep but when I do it is to put food on the table and I keep what I need. The issue is that some of you and some of the people in the pictures are un-educated when it comes to game management. There are reasons for seasons, limits and selective harvest of certain species. It is for their own good. Would you rather have 300,000,000 fish in a lake that are all stunted and have weird growths on them or 300,000 fish that are healthy, large and growth free?
It would be nice if all of the fish were identified. The big goofy looking head thing is called a Mole or Sunfish. I see hundreds of these things every summer when I chase Tuna and Dorado offshore. You have to watch out for them so that you do not hit them with your boat.
The shark with spots on it is a Whale Shark, it is harmless. The Alligator Gar is a deadly fish and have been known to kill people. They are large and extremely aggressive, not to mention living dinosaurs (been around for millions of years).
The Marlin were all kept and killed just for the sport of it. That was the thing back in the 30s and 40s. The sailfish is the one in the pic that says shiny metal trophy, most likely it was released after the picture.
There are some sturgeon in the pictures too, many get released but some are kept to be smoked. That Salmon is being held by someone for Calif. Dept. Fish and Game and was mostlikely released after measurements and such were taken for scienctific research on salmon. The catfish were mostlikely kept to feed people. The Black Sea Bass are actually a type of Grouper. Now they are protected and ILLEGAL to keep. That stingray was probably released also as they are not that great to eat. The oarfish was dead before they caught it. The Tuna, well they are table fish. The Halibut are also table fish. The Great Barracudda was probably released as they are not that great to eat other, and are dangerous.

I'm no treehugger and generally I agree with you, however, I have to correct something you said: Alligator gar are not dangerous to humans (except idiots who stick their hands near their mouths while trying to unhook one). There has only been one reported case of an attack by an alligator Gar and that's suspect (an old record and not trustworthy as studying bite wounds was primitive then, more likely a gator attack.) I grew up around gars, swam with them and caught them and never once was I ever attacked by a gar at any size. Yes, when taken out of the water and restrained they will swipe to bite you but that's defensive, not aggressive. Most animals will defend themselves. This species and it's related gar are becoming more rare thanks to misinformed DNR and ignorant locals who consider them "trash" and kill them without any need or use, tossing their bodies on the bank to rot. I've seen stretches of water which once teamed with them empty and silent. Their rolling pops as they gulp air no more.
These fish take 14 years, yes, years to mature and can live to at least 90 so with this slow growth rate it can be overfished very quickly which is what's been happening these days with these "fishermen" using bows. I've fished all my life but bowhunting fish is not fishing. You can't release a speared fish. I doubt highly they eat what's speared either. Its trophy fishing and destroying the species.Big gar are breeding females, remove them, the population will collapse-- all because the fish simply looks scary.

Amen, Brother.
I too fight wildfires as a Dozer Operator. Time and time again it's the tree hugging morons that make us have to risk our lives to save them because they do not seem to comprehend things.
As for the fees and such you are 100% correct about where they go here in CA. The prices go up every year but I have no issue with paying to help manage our natural resources so that one day my kids and grandkids can enjoy them as much as I do.
To the person that thinks most of these fish are old. You are slightly mistaken. Many fish such as Tuna, Marlin, Swordfish, Yellowtail, Bass, Barracudda, Catfish and others that I don't even bother mention grow extremely fast. Most of that has to do with where the fish are from and if they are tropical or not. In the ocean it is survival of the fittest, so in other words it's get bigger than the others or be the others dinner. Black Sea Bass and Grouper are old fish when they get up to the size of some of the ones in those pictures as they are slow to grow but live many years.
Warm water fish tend to grow much faster than their cold water cousins. Reason being is because warmer water usually has more nutrients and more food sources in them than colder water does. As a result the fish grow where as in the cold water they are more lethargic and do not eat as much because of slow metabolisms.
Next time one of you people that think you know it all come talking and preaching, know your facts.

Notice that all of these bleeding heart, d-bag's are complaining about "killing" these fish, when not a single one of them were there to actually know what really happened to the fish after the photo's were taken? Some of these moron's even try to throw god into it, as if to say that god didn't have to kill animal's to eat... To me, that kinda' falls under the same category as The "Virgin" Mary... That had a kid.. RRRIIIIGGGHHHTTTT... And Santa Clause IS real, and is also best friend's with a Mr. Easter Bunny and Mrs. Tooth Fairy!! Also notice that every single one of these very same noted d-bag's have absolutely NO idea how to spell, use grammar or punctuation? HAHAHA... Maybe they should spend more time learning an edumacation than crying and complaining about the food chain, circle of life and why god, as an "artist", made beautiful, big fish like these taste soo dang' good!!! These are probably the same idiot's that will go to a specialty store and buy Omega-3 Fish Oil.. Oh that's right, god just put that in a bottle or pill form for us.. No fish died to make that stuff... RIGHT?!

You idiots fretting over these fish should really worry about the state our govt is in. Soon giant corps will kill everything to get the profits they desire, the environment (all fishies)and even the workers that create the products they are profitting from, by overworking them to death, or stressing them into a heart attack over lost wages, lost benefits (especially health care) WE all are in deep sh_t! Oh Yeah, cool photos!

For all of those that condemn the fishermen: How do you know that the fish were real or if it was a doctored photo? You might be expressing anger at nothing.
