Working at a viral video/internet trend website, we see a LOT of remixes, mashups, re-appropriations, parodies etc. Most, as you can imagine, are creative in their own way but lack that "Why didn't I think of that?" quality. So, when an idea like The Johnny Cash Project comes along, we have to show it some love.

Using 'Ain't No Grave,' the legend's last music video, as the template, site creator Chris Milk made an open call for contributors to each draw a single frame of the video, which he collated together (thousands of frames and counting) into one disparate, yet faithful, re-creation.

As Milk explains on the site, "Through this website, we invite you to share your vision of Johnny Cash, as he lives on in your mind's eye. Working with a single image as a template, and using a custom drawing tool, you'll create a unique and personal portrait of Johnny....Strung together and played in sequence over the song, the portraits will create a moving, ever evolving homage to this beloved musical icon."

You can (and should) view the video below, but the site goes a step further, breaking down every frame into different artistic styles and showing the actual creation and info for each one. Art nerds, we see you! The project is ongoing, so head over to the site for more info on how to contribute.
