The meme didn't start on YTMND with the "break-up letter". It was a copy of baumanletters.ytmnd.com , which was a product of the eBaum/YTMND wars. Much funnier, and much better performed.

The "break-up letter" is a rip-off of said letter, and gained popularity because it was more accessible to more people - and it's been diminishing returns ever since.
