google pacman game doodleWhen Google celebrated the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man by changing its logo to a working version of the classic game, the internet wasted an enormous amount of time playing it. How much time? One software company estimates that Google users spent a total of 4.82 million hours on Google's little tribute to classic gaming.

According to RescueTime, makers of an app that tracks where you waste your time online, the average time people spent on Google.com jumped from 11 seconds to 47 seconds. RescueTime estimates that 75% of the people who hit Google.com didn't see the "insert coin" button and stop to play Pac-Man, so those 5 million wasted hours came from the 25% who did.

Incidentally, if all of the Pac-Man players made as much as the average Google employee, that would be $298,803,988 worth of gaming. That kind of money will buy you a heck of a lot of arcade tokens.
