The necktie as we know it today (the four-in-hand) was one of countless innovations born out of the Industrial Revolution. Since then, four primary knots have emerged: the four-in hand, the Pratt, the Half-Windsor and the Windsor.
However, according to research at Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, up to eighty-five knots are possible. Granted, you wouldn't want to wear most of them, but there are a few, like the Victoria, that you might find quite fetching.

The first video doesn't look like a traditional Windsor knot (which is shown correctly here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tying_the_Windsor_Knot.jpg), and it actually ties a simple knot in your tie, which can ruin it in the long run.

Can't tie a tie? Give up and buy a bolo tie. It looks cool, has a manly aire, and makes people think you're a cowboy!

There are 85 ways to tie a regular tie according to 2 physicists who studied the matter in their 1999 book. That's just from the right side. There are an additional 85 ways from the left side as well! Bow ties are extra. It really was a slow day in the lab. Most of these combinations do not work. There are a few more that do: Kelvin, Grantchester, Hanover, and Balthus. The Pratt (or Shelby as some call it) is the best, all around knot for hanging straight down and using only a small amount of material to tie. Looks great with any width or thickness of tie.

Do I have to be the only one to say that most of these look the same? The final product of the Cavendish is just a shi**y Windsor knot.
