404 error pages are usually one of the internet's great annoyances. Either you mistyped something or some website hasn't fixed its broken links. Either way, it's "file not found." You don't get what you want and you're annoyed. That's why it's great when a creative 404 page comes along to surprise you and make you smile at a moment that's normally boring (at best) or aggravating (at worst).
Some 404 pages go above and beyond the call of duty. Not only do they not suck, they're actually better than the website you were browsing when you landed on them. I've collected 15 of these tasty 404 treats, so take a look and consider the next 10 minutes of your life "not found."
- This elaborate page from BlueDaniel.com simulates being lost in the NYC subway. The movie posters, exit sign and graffiti all have "lost" themes and train #404 periodically pulls into the station.
- NPR's 404 page features famous lost people (and things), including Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Hoffa and Waldo.
- Dawdle.com powers up with a classic Super Mario Bros. joke.
- Daze Of Our Lives goes the Ye Olde 404 route. A pox on these accursed technological contraptions!
- ERROR: You've embarrassed this cat while he does his business on sparklecat.com's 404 page.
- Meena Inc. must have paid President Obama a fortune to make a cameo on their 404 page.
- Hark! Merge Web Excellence has enlisted Ha! Ha! Guy as its official 404 spokesman.
- Canada's MuchMusic asks "What'd you do to the interslice!?" That must be the Canadian word for internet, eh?
- This is one of the Safe For Work images in B3ta's (partially NSFW) 404 slideshow. Warning: swears and private parts ahead!
- Badmouth.net has another celebrity guest entry. Here's U2, playing their hit song about 404 pages.
- Plinko.net gets a little bit Poe-etic with this 404 tribute to Poe's 'The Raven.'
- Rockband.com's 404 page is, cleverly enough, the FAILED screen from Rock Band.
- Transverse Technologies features the seldom-seen Alphorn trio on its 404 page. Man, I might have to post some Alphorn videos soon. Those guys are awesome.
- Those guys at I Wear Your Shirt have way too much time on their hands.
- Limpfish took out an ad for its missing page.

I made this 404 page for a friend of mine, who has his own SEO company, www.searchenginesmarketer.com. We are both Superhero nerds, so it was fitting to be able to sneak a little fun deep in the site.
