The Insane Clown Posse video, 'Miracles,' was recently posted on YouTube and has since become an internet meme due to its seemingly ignorant lyrics, specifically the following excerpt:
Many claim that the ICP is extolling the tenets of the anti-science movement, first introduced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, specifically in his Discourse on the Arts and Sciences. This movement states that science can lead to moral corruption and arrogance. However, it seems that the ICP is not saying that science is worthless, but that truth is inherently unknowable. They are, it seems, students of the great sociologist Thomas Kuhn and his groundbreaking work The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.Water, fire air and dirt--f*cking magnets, how do they work? An' I don't wanna talk to a scientist; y'all muthaf*ckas lyin' and gettin' me pissed.
Kuhn said that science, heretofore viewed as a progressive study, is in fact not progressive, but rather based on large-scale changes in thought and theory. For instance, Newton is one of the fathers of modern science, with his laws and equations still being taught in physics and calculus classes to this day. However, when Einstein theorized his relativistic physics, not only did his equations give better results than Newton's, but by their mere existence showed that Newton's equations were all wrong, merely approximations of the "truth."
To put it simply, Kuhn stated that each one of these sets of beliefs was called a "paradigm." And, when a paradigm exhibited enough anomalies, for instance the inability to apply Newtonian physics to sub-atomic motion, scientists would theorize a new paradigm to take the old one's place. The upshot of this was that no paradigm in itself could be called truth. Rather, if the universe's laws were a clock, a paradigm could only describe the motion of the hands; there was no way to see the gears themselves.
Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler AKA Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are simply claiming this with their lyrics, "magnets, how do they work?" The truth is the theory of magnetism has changed wildly over the decades and is still veiled in a certain amount of mystery. Sure, scientists know how to use magnets, how to measure magnetic force, even how to chart magnetic fields, but to actually explain that force is to create a unified field theorem which remains the unfound Holy Grail in scientific research. Scientists themselves do not really know how magnets work. What they have now is simply a paradigmatic explanation of magnetism.
And in terms of scientists "lyin'," here again the ICP is repeating their belief that scientists remain hard-headedly in support of a certain paradigm and it is often left to the next generation of scientists to have the flexibility of thought to accept a better fitting paradigm.
Although Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope may have never read Kuhn's works, those who suggest that their raps are ignorant haven't been properly educated in scientific theory and sociology. For, if they had been, they would know that the ICP is not ignorant. Far from it: they are keeping Thomas Kuhn's theories alive and well.

Based on ICP's *aherm* illustrious body of work, I suspect the lyric in question is less a case of the Clowns being unpolished intellectuals and more a case of "even a blind hog finding an acorn every now and then" as my grandpa would say.

Why do you care what a "busta" thinks Twitchy?
Also, learn to spell out words. Even if you had something worthwhile to say, it'd be very hard to decipher in that mess.

Sadly I think that you speak out of ignorance yourself. I could venture a guess that the only ICP song you have ever heard is Miracles and only because it became such a meme. The fact is that they themselves have addressed this very issue. That of COURSE we know the how of magnets, but we don't know the why. I have a lot of respect for the gentleman who wrote this article as he took the deeper meanings of the song into account.
Going back to my point. Had you taken the time to listen to any number of ICP's more positive songs you would find the same messages throughout. That we as people need to come together and be human beings to one another. That there is a certain 'magic' as it were to every day life and so many of us pass it over without stopping to take a look.
Your ignorance in the matter only strengthens us as Juggalos, because we understand that every day people will not understand us. The fact is we live the same lives as everyone else. I know executives, policeman, heck even a doctor that are all Juggalos.
Educate yourself to a subculture before you think to slam them my friend. Please keep in mind that Juggalos such as Twitchy don;t speak for all of us ;)

Patrick,
See my reply to Ashes.
I had to listen to that idiotic chorus of "the Great Malenko HA HA HA HA!" on repeat at obnoxious volumes from my neighbors house for an entire summer.
I know from whence I speak.

Patrick,
Also, I'd be interested in hearing about some of these other "more positive" songs you mention.
All I know is the ridiculous ICP and Twizted (spelling?) crap my neighbor used to blast, and it was all pretty misogynistic and angry from what I remember.
One other friend tried to get me to "be fair" with them and played a movie where they made fun of sex with fat chicks and otherwise came across as a couple of cut rate Abbot and Costello wannabes. It didn't really help his case.

Furthermore (lol, I know, I'm getting ridiculous, it's a slow work day), as for your assertion that I should "Educate (my)self to a subculture before you think to slam them my friend", I never once slammed juggalos in my initial post, just the sophomoric lyrics.
I really have tried to understand it. My ex-brother-in-law was a huge juggalo. I just don't get the attraction. I mean "if I was a butthole I'd just be an exit"? Really? That's not subtly homophobic or anything. And "All I wanna do is choke a bitch, roll up a jimmy and smoke a bitch"? I mean, I realize the second part of that is double entendre as "smoke a bitch" could mean smoke a joint or shoot someone. So I will give them credit there for being kind of witty. Witty enough to come up with a little wordplay. But still. Not my cup of tea.
I'd never try to censor it. I'm a firm believer in letting folks say what they want, even if I don't agree with it. Shoot, I even understand that fans may not necessarily agree with the content but still enjoy it (I mean, I'd never shoot a person, but I enjoy shoot-em-up action movies and video games with guns and swords). But yeah, I have a hard time seeing the positive in lyrics like that.

"WHAT" would I know, do you mean?
I know that I grew up with a bunch of white trash pill heads who got jacked up and painted their faces and blasted the crap and stuck their tongues out at the cars that drove past.
And that I didn't care for it.
That's all I know.

i think its a great article... it makes you think and it finally gives credit to icp that is well deserved... anytime somebody calls them ignorant, they are still so hard headed because of what has been taught to them... ppl need to realize that maybe the opinions of the possibilities of life and nature that have been shown to them may be wrong, and there may be no real explanation to anything in life... and thats what needs to be taught..

You missed the point of the song. It's not anti-science. The song's about things in life that are cool and amazing. ICP don't hate scientists at all.

Ok before I say anything u grammar nazi's be easy I'm writing this from a ps3 so chill out if I don't puncuate or spell properly.ICP haven't got this much reaction from there music since the great milenko lol.I think its great everybody is trying to rip them apart for a song that is pretty positive.Anyway I'm a Juggalo have been since I was 15 and I don't even like the dang song lol.I get the message in my own way which to me is life is awesome and something to be enjoyed and the world is full of wonder take the time to appreciate it.But everybody heard that lyric and went apeshit its just hilarious to me.I mean debate all you want to make yourself feel smarter than two white guys who paint up like clowns and rap but these guys never graduated from high school yet run a multimillion dollar company and in a time when record companies are struggling seems like the clowns are a miracle.Or just have a way better work ethic than most.I am out like bret michaels brains!!

Haha.
Yeah. We should all take our queues from a couple of high school drop outs, because drop out millionaires are totally the rule, and not the one in a billion exception.
It isn't the new song that annoys me (although it does come across as pretty stupid). It's the entire body of ridiculous woman hating, gay bashing, ignorance celebrating work.

Lmao oh god i never said take queues from them just pointing out they're doing ok for a couple dumb asses.I like the music it entertains me if that classifies me as some grade A tard to some people oh well can't please everyone but I would hope I carry myself to where people could overlook this flaw of liking shitty rap lol.

Kuhn wasn't a sociologist, but a physicist and a philosopher of science. His work has been misunderstood by epistemological relativists to make the logically dubious point that we know nothing, and that empiricism cannot lead to the truth. Kuhn never suggests this, but makes the point that succesive paradigms bring us a better model to fit observations, and that have a predictive quality by which we can create a progressively more consistent model of reality. Newtonian mechanics still work (the inverse square law is still viable), but not to the accuracy that relativistic theories do. Saying it is wrong is stupid. I don't think you fully understand Kuhn's work if you think that relativity proves previous paradigms of empirical science wrong, because by that logic, we don't know that relativity is right either. We have a very good idea how magnetism works; it is a manifestation of the electromagnetic force which is explained in Quantum Electrodynamics. There is no good reason to think this will change any time soon, so we can just apply Occams' razor and for practical reasons keep testing it, rather than supposing it is not true because the paradigm may shift at some pouint. Bertrand Russell said that although nothing is certain, but some things are more certain than others.
