Libraries are, without a doubt, our nation's best kept secret. For the life of me, I can't figure out why this is. All those things you pay for or download illegally -- books, movies, music --- the library lets you have them legally for free. I'm going to say this again: the library has new releases of books and movies for free. You go online, request the material and if a library in your state has it, they will ship it to the one that's like five minutes from your house. You know, the one you never go to. That quiet and clean place with free internet access that's staffed by just about the nicest people you'll ever meet. Almost sounds too good to be true.
Well, if we're not careful, soon enough it will be. Our nation's school and public libraries are shutting down and reducing staff at an alarming rate. A Nation Without School Librarians is a collaborative Google Map aimed at showing just how many cuts are taking place. To learn about what you can do to help save the libraries, head on over to SaveLibraries.org, ILoveLibraries.org, or the American Library Association. Oh, and why not go and check out your local library just for fun.

Why do I illegally download things when I could get them from the library for free?
Because libraries don't get them for free. They pay the exact same fees for every movie title checked out that Blockbuster pays. It doesn't matter if it's a recent big-budget flick or a nature documentary: the library pays either way.
Books are bought once, I will honor that purchase by reading them with care and delight.
Movies are bought every time your library card is scanned. I will take my chances with bitorrent.
