It's obvious that we love animals at Urlesque. We've also made it abundantly clear that we love giant things, too. So when I happened upon the amazing creature that is the capybara, the largest member of the rodent family, I was pretty into it. Then I found Caplin Rous, a domesticated capybara that lives in Texas and also has quite the internet presence. It was love at first sight -- especially when I found out he liked popsicles, blueberries and swimming.
A trip to Texas recently brought me within driving distance of Caplin's house so I thought it'd be the perfect opportunity to meet Caplin, his owner Melanie Typaldos and find out a little bit more about Caplin's life online and off. And boy, did we eat a lot of popsicles.
See the exclusive Behind the Sites video and photos below... and try not to pass out because of his adorableness.

I like the Princess Bride reference, such an awesome movie.
I remember reading somewhere that capybaras smell like popcorn...

Capybaras are not giant hamsters - they are giant guinea pigs! He's cute as heck! (Although my piggies are totally cute, too!)

Kelly - Is there actually anywhere in the United States that you can buy a capybara? If so, do you know how much they cost? I was under the impression that they were not available as pets in the States, and that they were only found (in the wild) in South America. I would really LOVE to own one!

There was a capybara at our local pet shop a couple years ago... (I live in Texas as well, maybe he ended up being caplin?) He was there for quite awhile and I don't think that he was actually for sale but I could be mistaken.. He ended up being sold at an auction for quite a lot of money but I don't remember the exact sum.
I feel like if you really want a capybara an auction might be your best bet. But like I said, I HAVE seen one in a pet store before.

So that's what they are called. When I was in the Navy in Cuba they ran all over the base. We called them jokingly "Banana Rats".
