Fried chicken chain KFC just announced a new sandwich called the Double Down, with two pieces of chicken instead of bread. It was test-marketed in Nebraska and Rhode Island back in 2009 and I guess the tests went well, because the Double Down is going nationwide on April 12th.
The Double Down places bacon, two cheeses and sauce in between two slices of chicken.
And yes, it's real, though it sounds less like a real menu item than a homemade monstrosity from This is Why You're Fat, a website that chronicles people's disgusting adventures in improvised fast food. TIWYF helped popularize the McGangbang, an unlisted menu item at McDonald's made by cramming an entire McChicken sandwich into the middle of a Double Cheeseburger.
Are KFC's idea guys looking to sites like This Is Why You're Fat for inspiration? Well, they haven't denied it.
Just looking at the Double Down gives me half a heart attack, but its calorie count isn't as astronomical as you might expect. It packs 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1,380mg of sodium, which puts it neck-and-neck with McDonald's Big Mac (and way behind the illustrious McGangbang) in terms of calories.
That doesn't erase the feeling that you're eating a failure pile in a sadness bowl, though.
