You talk to your cat like it's a person; you dress it like it's a person; if cat food commercials are any indication, you feed it like it's a person; and yet for some inexplicable reason you expect it to drink like it's a cat.Well not all cats feel particularly comfortable shoving their heads into a bowl of dirty floor water every time they get thirsty! Some prefer more dignified methods like, y'know, a cup. And when someone refuses to take a hint and get her one, sometimes said cat is forced to take desperate and adorable measures like dipping her paw into the water and licking the water off like it's a sponge.
We kid, Amanda, we kid. We know your cat's just a little loopy. But seriously, you should definitely try the cup thing. The only thing cuter than a cat drinking off its paws is a cat with tiny tea cups taped to its paws.
Update! This isn't the only cat who seems to be drinking 'like a weirdo'. Our friend Meredith sent in a video of her kitty Reno doing the same thing!

This is nothing new! My two cats Calie and Abbee have been drinking like this all their lives. In fact Calie, the older one, taught Abbee, the younger one, how to do this. It was so funny when I first saw it.

met a woman who had a cat who actually will take dips -like swimming!- in a large tub of water in her apartment. this kitty first would upset the 3 cat large waterbowl sort of rolling in it. or tip over totally large bowls! (not good for a wood floor!!) so . Miss Kitty has her pool. I saw this saved in pics on her cell!!! a remarkable cat. once upon a time long ago when I lived outside the city I had a cat who would run with my neighbor's kids in and out of the sprinkler on the lawn in the summer! then he'd lie there on his side with me and my dog and the kids and .. pant like the dog!!!! cats are curious creatures! nothing they do much suprises me!

have to say, my cat's sprinkler runs aside, they ARE somewhat mysterious creatures BUT I'm sure there are those who study CAT behavior just as there are those who study (domestic dog) behavior. I am not speaking of lab animals but of animals who live in normal homes on varying diets, etc. cornell Univ has a class which does this with dogs; it would stand to reason, I'd think that they or someone else does the same with cats. although I am (guilty!) of being a 'dog person' I so agree with the woman who said the cats are demonstrating against the size of what they are drinking from! although Reno is being a brat and sampling mom's drink OR saying 'hello; better freshen up MY drink or you're going to get more of the same.' cats are FAR from being 'stupid' the same as dogs; they simply have different senses than we do and are built for what they are; cats and dogs who are domesticated (sort of!).

Lots of cats drink this way. One of my cats drinks and eats this way. He also likes to lay in the kitchen sink and have water pouring all over him. His big self stops up the hole so the water starts to fill up around him in the sink and he just lays there in it. His sister likes playing in it too!

Actually, I take offense to that title, "How The Dumbest Cat In The World Drinks Water". Cats are very smart animals and should be treated with great respect. Also, I did watch the video, but I wasn't laughing. I was crying. My 16 and 1/2 year old cat did that a lot, and in fact did it just a few days before she died. We had to put her to sleep 6 days ago, and I would give ANYTHING to see her put her paw in the water dish and lick her paw like that again.

I foster cats....they are hilarious!!!! My cats loooove drinking from the sink. Even though they have fresh water they will meow continuously until i turn on the faucet. If i have a cup of water sitting somewhere...they drink from it! Even sprite or fresca left in cups they will drink. lol. My pitbull loves beer. He actually paws me when im drinking some so he can have some. Its adorable. Trust me---i give him one lick. Its not going to hurt him. Hes 12 now and ive had him since he was 4 months old!

We had a cat who ATE like that. He would drag dry food from one bowl, across the floor, up the side and then into the water bowl. Then he would scoop it out and eat it. I have heard Maine Coon cats do that (thus the name?), but I don't see any Maine Coon in the video stars here. Cats are just weird.

Basically this cat is not dumb. It is basically telling you the bowl is crap.

my cat also does this but she makes a horrible mess spilling the water all on the floor before licking her paws. she also will drop the dogs hard food in their water bowl to soften up then eat it. of course she always leaves chunks of food floating in their water bowl making it dirty...
