ChatRoulette party

A crowd of people played ChatRoulette this Monday at Union Hall, a bar in Brooklyn, NY. Reports are in – it was fun!

Surely someone's done this before, just not in the super-documented New York City bar scene. (If you have, send us pics!) Many more will do it now. Here are the rules for holding a happy ChatRoulette party where somebody gets hurt. (Just making sure you're paying attention. But seriously, you will see penises.)

1. Get the biggest screen you can.
You want all your participants to feel included. Don't expect to entertain a crowd of forty from a laptop. Project it on a wall, or at least plug in a big monitor.

2. Get used to disappointment.
Some people will skip right past you. That's normal. But you know that! If you don't, you should probably check out ChatRoulette on your own before you throw this thing up in front of a crowd.

3. Get used to nudity.
And I mean bad nudity, which is poorly lit penises and half-dressed bodies with no heads attached. It's silly, really. Since about 14% of ChatRoulette users are boys with their pants down, and since the site is all set up to randomize things (you don't enter your age or "safe search" preferences), there's probably no way to keep the perverts out of your chats, even if you try working with ChatRoulette (though we hear some people are gonna try). Roll with it and enjoy the wankers' reactions. That seemed to work at Union Hall.

4. Get some lighting.
Makes for better photos and more fun for the people on the other end.

5. Get creative.
By next week, these parties will be all over the place as bars ride the fad. So step it up with a theme: Ask everyone to dress in one color, or bring cat ears. Find more public places to hold your chat-up. What's the biggest possible venue? Will someone display ChatRoulette on-screen at the nerd conference SXSW Interactive?

6. Get in touch.
Remember, if you meet someone you like at a ChatRoulette event, you can always missed-connection them.
