We're no strangers to Japanese manhole covers, but to be honest, we've never really thought about what lies beneath. As it turns out, Japan's sewers are actually pretty epic. Built to prevent overflow of Tokyo's waterways during rain and typhoon seasons, the $2 billion+ Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, aka The G-Cans Project, looks more like an underground temple than a sewage system.
