Is Epic Beard Man a villain?
That's one view of the older white man who beat up a middle-aged black man on a bus after a racially charged argument, and it's supported by these two facts:
- Epic Beard Man -- Thomas Bruso, or Tom Slick -- told a TV news interviewer that the man he beat up was a known murderer who is now "off the streets."
- Soon after, the other guy -- known only as Michael -- appeared for a radio interview on WILD 94.9. He denied the murderer rumor, and seeing as he's free to walk into a publicized radio interview, he is most certainly not in prison or being pursued by the police.
Most of the post-fight coverage is revealing clues like this, indicating that Tom Bruso (who also claimed Michael had a knife and landed three punches on Tom, none of which shows up in the video) likely instigated a fight on a bus, left a man bleeding, and for a brief moment became an undeserved hero while slandering his victim as a murderer.
But what if we aren't getting the whole story? What if the real villain is, well, everyone?
This has been a racial story from Day 1. The first words we hear on the original video -- now viewed at least five million times, counting copies -- are "Let's get back to business. How much you charge me for a spit-shine?" This is likely a racial reference, since Michael takes offense, although we don't know if Michael started the argument by offering a spit-shine (presumably with the same racial undertone). That's what Tom claims and Michael denies. Later, Tom calls himself a "white boy." They're on a bus in a racially charged city in a largely segregated area. Remember this as you read on.
Again, we don't know what happened just before the fight. Lyanna Washington, the lady who shot the original video, later defended Michael and herself. If you take her word for it, Tom started the fight. Of course, it's just as easy to say that Lyanna, who egged Michael on in the video and joked about stealing Tom's bag afterward, would naturally not reveal damaging evidence about the man she favored in the fight.
We're mostly left to judge these two men based on their reputations and their post-fight PR. And we know a lot more about Tom than about Michael.
Tom is a known San Francisco Bay Area character. Many commenters on Urlesque's last Epic Beard Man post told stories about seeing Tom around town in SF or Oakland. He's also fought with police at a baseball game. Basically he's the sort of transient character that populates most major cities, especially the temperate and tolerant Bay Area. This makes him suspect -- this is, we assume, the sort of guy who spouts off anything that manipulates his listeners' emotions -- but doesn't actually prove him wrong.
Michael, on the other hand, manages to look like a usually upstanding citizen in his radio interview. He speaks carefully, apologizes to Tom and all war vets, and clearly strives to present himself as a sane and good man who regrets an out-of-character drunken fight. He makes no disparaging remarks about Tom and turns down a half-joking offer from his interviewer for an arranged fight. He also points out that he's not so young -- so the angle of "old guy punishes young upstart" isn't true.
Is Michael spinning this story, or does he mean everything he says here? I really don't know.
Tom wants to fight. He loves the attention. And it seems like every Bay Area resident with a video camera loves to give it to him. He's asking Michael for his rematch -- if the winner of the first fight can even technically call for a rematch.
What fascinates me is the overwhelming influence on this story of homemade videos vs. mainstream media and authorities. Some time near the bus fight, Lyanna shot Tom and Michael pacing around each other in the street, Tom threatening to hit Michael, but no one coming to blows. Lyanna told CBS 5 News that Tom later let the police arrest him, but we don't know what other legal repercussions he or Michael faced.
All we learn about these two is coming from on-the-street interviews. Even the traditional news outlets covering this story are getting most of their national exposure on YouTube. Plenty of the people publicizing this story aren't making a dime off it. They're doing this just for fun. And all they want is more posturing and more violence.
The message boards resound with accusations and racist hatred, mostly against one man who may have been the victim of a known potentially violent antagonist who's still walking free. That antagonist, of course, is likely a mentally disturbed man who's not getting the treatment he needs to become a better-adjusted citizen.
Okay, this isn't the beginning of the end, the point when America gave into its bloodlust and started openly goading its disaffected poor into public fights for our amusement, turning real people into our unpaid gladiators in a mockery of a free and safe society while the police and government did nothing. While it's a scary look at how our love for drama and conflict can escalate arguments into physical fights, it's also an opportunity to expose the social problems that lead to two men punching each other on a public bus while the other passengers cheer them on, and to maybe find a solution.
Anyone got an idea what that solution is?

Nick, I really, really like your take on this.
No matter what caused this or who these people are, it probably wasn't something that justified a really ugly, violent incident. It's important to look at why shit like this happens and why the f*ck do we love seeing people bleed so much?

Lyanna Washington incited violence, race baited Thomas Bruso and conspired to steal his things. Mr Bruso may be guilty of bigoted behavior, but he did not start this fight. He removed himself from the situation and went to the front of the bus. This is the type of reportage that keeps poor blacks "in their place" as victims of racism. The so-called reporter Mr. Douglas is no different than George Wallace

The fact is that when Tyrone (the black man) told epic beard man to get out of his face, he did! He walked awayf from the fight. It was the black man that followed epic beard man to the front of the bus and it was him that landed the first punch. Epic beard man clearly didn't want to fight - why else would he have moved to the front of the bus. It doesn't matter what epic beard man may or may not have said; it was the black man that turned it into a physical confrontation. Why is it so hard for society to see anything that a black man does as wrong? Why must we patronize black people in this way?

Rick,
I totally agree with you here. I'm actually doing a documentary about Thomas Bruso and my objective is to show that he made a difference (before the fight) and that in the end he was "the better man." There seems to be a census to this fact everywhere you look on the internet. 'Disregarding' Thomas Bruso past history, this recent story shows him being just and doing what was right.

I just have to wonder why there is not any mention of Iyanna Washington yelling "beat his white ass".. Is is possible that the black girl could be a racist? Certainly not for we all know only white people can be racist!
You ask for a solution,,, it would help if the author of this pathetic piece of an article would report the whole story

Huh. Unusually well-considered piece for Urlesque! (Which isn't a knock, it's just a fact.) Appreciated.

The answer is really more simple than anyone wants to admit: Human Nature. People fight, and have fought since the beginning of time. War has shaped our species for than any force of nature ever could. The fact that we deny it to this day only makes real-life violence more attractive.
Add racism in any form and you have something that no one can resist being inflamed about. The video hits the sweet spot that makes it sickly intriguing.

To the interviewer, believe what you will.
Although I cannot spot any knives on the video, despite what Tom said, Michael's attitude on the bus does not match (by far) his statements on the radio interview. It seems like he's been instructed by his lawyer. Take these passages for instance:
At 6:31 (on the second video of this page) he says "I actually went beside him to say (...) 'calm down, why're you talking like this'".
Really?
How about when he refers to Tom as being a 'huge guy'? So this must mean he's a very small guy compared to him. He's smaller alright, but throughout the video it seemed like he was the one trying to intimidate Tom, and not the other way around.
I hoped he'd be a little bit more consistent. Walking around with a thug-like attitude, and then playing off as the victim, an intoxicated 50-year old veteran's brother who was just defending himself from..remarks.
Sorry, I don't buy it.

As is often the case, the reaction to the video tells us more about society than the video itself does. It's predictable that most whites are going to side with Thomas Bruso (because who among them hasn't been intimidated by an urban black thug?), most blacks are going to side with Michael (because who among them haven't had some crazy old white man spew racist shit at them?), and most liberals are going to twist them self into circles trying to see both sides of everything. I'm in the latter camp.
I admit to getting a primal thrill about seeing a bully get a beatdown, and Michael certainly seemed like a bully. But let's face it... all of the major players were racist, violent tools, including the cameraperson and most of Epic Beard Man's biggest fans.
All of which goes to show that humans are still basically hairless chimps, beating on members of a neighboring tribe and not thinking twice about it. But who am I to judge? I still always click on the videos of someone getting punched in the face.

I think the people who made him out to be a hero were from 4chan, so always consider your source.
Tom actually is probably a little mental, considering how he constantly rambles on, wildly exaggerates stories and then breaks down almost instantly about how his mother died.
Seems like maybe a touch of schizo? Or maybe just long term effects of PTSD?

Trying the old turn the wacked out old man/hero into wacked out old man/villain. I see your tricks... but the fact of the matter is that yes "Slick" is a bit cuckoo, but he is also a veteran who has lived through a very tough time ad when faced with adversity knows when to move to the front of the bus and when to throw some fists.
On the other hand you have Michael aka Tyrone, a 50 year old guy. Who happens to be on a bus at 12:30 in the afternoon. Piss drunk!!! but he's a nice guy really, when his veins aren't filled with alcohol on the morning you might meet him. Sometimes when you're drunk you make poor decisions and get into it with people you normally would just ignore and watch from a distance. Michael was clearly "cause" and now has to endure the "effects" of his actions. He will however never be forgotten, he is known as...
-Tyrone the drunk bus riding bully
-Mr. Drinky way too early
-The Ambalamps guy
-Bring Dem M&Ms
-Easy E's rotting corpse
-Michael "I need to go to AA" Bussington
-OOOOOOHH I'm Leakin!!!

Very well written, I spent about 2 hours reading everything I could about this incident after stumbling across it on Huffington Post last Sunday. Not sure what to make of it, heroes, villains, pitiful street people. After the dust has settled I see the women who took her video camera out to find some action, instigated herself a viral video then ripped off the guy when he left the bus. (it was nice of her to video her own crime) a Drunk and belligerent 50 year old and a 67 year old Vietnam Vet who’s probably never received the care he deserved after serving in that war.
I side with Tom on this and hope he benefits positively from all this.
Great post… Thanks

That's f*cking hilarious.. put the black man on the bus and he'll talk shit like a motherf*cker and you put him on the radio and all of a sudden he's all so silent and polite.. totally bullshit. If he wouldn't have gotten his ass beat this would be COMPLETELY different.

If you watch the second video...it pretty much proves that Micheal is lying! Tom claims he was talking about getting a spit shine, Micheal walked by and said "Whys a black man gotta spit shine shoes?"...Micheal said he didn't. In the video Tom asks "What d'you just say when you walked by?" to which Micheal replies "Whys a black man gotta spit shine shoes."
Not saying I side with either one because both were being ignorant, but I think Micheal had a bigger hand in initiating the fight than he is letting on.

The black thug got what he deserved, a good beating. I just love the way the mainstream media filters and controls the portrayal of Tom as racist and violent. Michael started the fight, Iyanna (the filmer liar, racist, thief) instigated it, and Tom finished it. Three cheers for Tom. I guarantee you, had the roles been reversed CNN headlines would be screaming "White Racists Beats Poor Black Bus Rider"....

Tom Bruso did not "instigate the fight." That much is obvious upon viewing the video - the Cornrows guy was the one who got up in Bruso's face to intimidate him and threw the first punch. Although he does have a shady past, Bruso should be viewed as a hero for standing up to thug. There were several black people on the bus who seemed to be very racist, such as the Cornrows guy and the black girls at the back of the bus who called Bruso "pinky" and yelled for Cornrows guy to beat Bruso's "white ass."
Bruso should be commended for his actions and deserves a medal. You are a fool if you honestly believe that this is the first time that Cornrows guy has ever behaved like this. I thought that Cornrows guy was lying throughout his radio interview.
