helicopter shot of a mountainous islandYou've probably seen stationary 360° panoramas. They let you click and drag your mouse to spin around a scene and zoom in and out with a couple keystrokes. It was cool for its time, but the latest technology lets you pan and scan videos. The effect is surreal.

CNN used this technology to take us inside the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti. You're on a set path, but you have free rein to look at whatever you want. If you pause the video it turns into a stationary panorama.

The creator of these video panoramics is Immersive Media.

Immersive Media's patented flagship, the Dodeca® 2360 camera system, captures high-resolution video from every direction simultaneously. It delivers 100 million pixels at 30 frames per second (2400x1200 pixels/frame) and supports a number of video formats.
It's a little more complex than the camera on your phone. Experiencing 360° video capture is pretty fascinating. You can participate in military training, jump off a bridge, or paraglide in Alaska. Can you imagine watching a feature film like this? A party scene would be chaotic and a little blurry. Below, drive through Manhattan, whale-watch, and explore the tropics, all inside a neat little embedded video.
