It's usually pretty easy for people to know when a dog is happy. A wagging tail, a playful bounce, and even a silly grin is enough to set of the Happy Dog Alarm (which, in our house, is always on).
But for this Shiba Inu (have we seen you somewhere before?) named Chii, happiness comes in the form of an ENORMOUS, EAR-TO-EAR SMILE that could make even a dog in a top hat doing soft-shoe look boring.
Just kidding. We need a dog in a top hat doing soft-shoe IMMEDIATELY. We've already got the paperwork filled out (a signature is still valid in crayon, right?).

This poor dog is not smiling. It is terrified and nervous. People like this should not be allowed to own animals.

I wish that someone could adopt this poor dog and give him the love and attention that he deserves and Not be on a chain! I wonder if the owners would consider it. It doesn't appear like they care
about him.

The dog is not scared, he is showing signs of a conditioned response much like Pavlov's dogs. If you notice the owner is holding the leash when he approached the dog and the other were not. He closed the eyes and tucked the ears in a anticipation of the leash being put on over his head. The tail was wagging and sticking up so he was not showing signs of submission or fear.

You all are idiots (except Nick). That is one happy friggin Shiba-Inu. I am the proud owner of a Shiba, and while mine doesn't quite smile like that, when shes exceedingly happy, her eyes get squinty, her ears flop and shake and her tail wags. She will also yodel and aroo while doing those things too. This dog was never beaten nor abused. A reason it was most likely on a short chain? Shibas are NOTORIOUS for running off and not listening when called, so needless to say im sure it was for the dog's safety, especially when a camera crew "interviewing" it.

This dog is not smiling !! He is scared. Short chain come on, What
is wrong with these people in that country. I hope they, if there is
any, catch this guy and chain him up in the prison cell. This is so
very sad :- (

Wow... You guys are (in polite terminology) ill informed. This "smile" is a common Shiba Inu trait. This is indeed how they show submissive excitement. This doggy is happy. If he were scared, he would avert his eyes and look down... and certainly not wag his tail.

You idiots, the dog isn't scared. Shiba inu's smile. It's what they do when they are happy. They squint their eyes, lay down their ears and quiver while doing it. As the owner of a shiba I see this face all the time.
