It's usually pretty easy for people to know when a dog is happy. A wagging tail, a playful bounce, and even a silly grin is enough to set of the Happy Dog Alarm (which, in our house, is always on).
But for this Shiba Inu (have we seen you somewhere before?) named Chii, happiness comes in the form of an ENORMOUS, EAR-TO-EAR SMILE that could make even a dog in a top hat doing soft-shoe look boring.
Just kidding. We need a dog in a top hat doing soft-shoe IMMEDIATELY. We've already got the paperwork filled out (a signature is still valid in crayon, right?).

NOW, I read that the dog may be petrified and this is a sign of fear? Can you get the Dog Whisperer to check this out?

I agree. This dog appeared submissive/afraid to me. The ears were slightly trembling. This was not a smile in my opinion either.

Notice the dog's ears-- they are flat and shaking. This is not a "smile". He is scared and nervous- especially when the man comes near.

AOL what kind of idiots do you have running this? This is not the picture of a
smiling dog. It is the picture of a frightened dog afraid he is going to get hit
or worse. This poor dog is SCARED, not happy. I hope the owner gets chained up
and excoriated by people globally who see this. SHAME on them.

If I were that dog, I'd be smiling too, considering the short chain he's on. He most likely has figured out that the lease means he'll actually get to move, sit, lay down -- something other that a 1 foot chain allows. I think the dog should be taken away from these obviously uncarlng people.

That is really sad. The poor dog looks so scared. I can't believe they keep the poor thing on such a short chain. I found this video very disturbing, oh and yes disgusting. What is so funny about a dog looking so scared? If someone cares for their dog they don't have then tethered up by a chain, and a short one at that. Really a heart breaking video. It is really sad that such a wonderful country and the people of Japan, would find humor in this. If there is an animal protection society in Japan, I hope and pray they see this and investigate. Shame on these owners.

I totally agree with you, This video was so sad. Poor dog. What kind of life does he have on any chain? I'd smile too if it was me, then I'd chew the creep up and spit him out. Which is much more humane than he deserves. At least the poor pup is not in China, because they would probably eat him.

AGREED! THIS IS NOT A HAPPY DOG! I own a Shiba Inu and I can tell you this is NOT their personality! This dog is scared, not happy! Please someone investigate this...there are plenty of Shiba Inu Rescue Groups that would take this dog and nuture it and give it the love it needs. Excuse me, but could they have found a shorter and thicker leash? My shiba only weighs 21 pounds, that chain is enough to hold a Pitt Bull! Please, do not be fooled by this video....it is clear to many dog owners and dog people on this site that this dog is not SMILING, but rather pleading to be loved and cared for! Smiling...you call that smiling?? They should be ashamed of themselves!

This dog is not smiling !! He is scared. Short chain come on, What is wrong with these people in that country. I hope they, if there is any, catch this guy and chain him up in the prison cell. This is so very sad :- (

I fully agree, after being around dogs all of my life, this dog is NOT smiling, it is very nervous & submissive.
Just seeing the dog on that short chain says enough to make it OBVIOUS that this animal is being abused. Chaining any dog like that is cruel, I've never had to keep my dogs on a chain or leash, they are loved & respected and they respond accordingly. They are well socialized & loving companions. I know a smiling dog when I see one. When I hike with my dogs & allow them to run freely along with me, they are smiling for REAL! I have several photos to prove it. :) :) This video was very disturbing! We can only hope that someone will report these ignorant people & the dog will be cared for with much more love & respect. People who abuse animals should be punished to the greatest extent of the law. If the same treatment can be done to them, EVEN BETTER!

That is the most pathetic looking video, poor excuse of a human. Poor puppy dog. Does Japan have agencies to protect the animals? Or is this dog dinner?

This is a terrible video. That poor dog is on a very short chain and if you look closely it's easy to see that his food and water dishes are way out of reach for him.He doesn't appear to be smiling but rather cringing and shaking. Not funny!
