Several years Eons ago, writer and comedian Mike Albo (with the help of New York Times writer Virginia Heffernan) created a character called The Underminer. The Underminer basically embodied everything wrong with young, urban professionals hellbent on personal growth and cultural superiority. As described in the book:
You can't escape him. You went to college with him, and he knows everything you've done since freshman year–every secret ambition you've had, every person you have ever had sex with, every unfortunate choice you made in trends. The Underminer makes you feel suicidal when you see him. But he is your friend.
The precursor to the "frenemy," The Underminer is someone you know, love, and love to hate. With a recurring column on Gawker, Albo's character eventually made it in video form to YouTube, where it remains beloved by hundreds of thousands of macrobiotic dog owners with the capacity to laugh at themselves.
