Curious as to why your favorite ladies on Facebook are all of a sudden posting seemingly random colors to their status messages? Yeah, we were too. And if you're first guess was some sort of Law & Order: SVU-inspired teenage sex scandal [NSFW!] color game that would have the local news all aflutter -- you're actually wrong.
Thanks to a bit of deep web spelunking (credit going to Kelly and her trusty Google), we've gathered that these one-line simple statuses are coming from a viral Facebook message, sent just to women, that asks for them to post only their bra color in their Facebook status. The message reads a bit like this,
So no, this isn't just to confuse people. According to a few sources, the messages are all claiming that efforts will hopefully conduct a viral spread of Breast Cancer Awareness.Something fun is going on. Write the color of your bra in your status. Just the color, nothing else. And send this on to ONLY women no men. It will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of cancer awareness. It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men wonder why the women have a color in their status.....LOL!
As supporters of viral movements (and a few of us faithful bra-wearers), we're all for this type of fun. Even slightly confusing Facebook status messages beat ones about babies pooping and last night's delicious casserole dinner. Got any more information for us, intrepid web friends? Send it on over.
(And BTW, black.)
UPDATE: Our friends at Lemondrop weigh in on the burgeoning fad. Sneak preview: they aren't so thrilled.
MORE UPDATES: So, did the colors make any difference? According to the Washington Post, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation had quite a surprise when the viral spread had a bit on a effect on their Facebook page: almost 140,000 new Facebook fans.

Dear Lindsey and AOL: Thanks for ending the fun little 'secret' we had from the guys. It was cute having my guy friends constantly asking what the colors meant. A small number figured it out, but at least they figured it out on their own, with no help from this article.

So apparently, men don't care about this, so let's keep it between just us girls.

Ok, 1st, This Kelly person that did the research, should be fired and me hired in her place. "deep web Spelunking"? It came up on the 1st search i did and was the first hit. took less than 30 seconds.
2nd, I think it's a fantastic way to spread awareness of any cancer to begin with, but us guys should have been let in on it, a lot of us have family members that passed from Breast and other cancers. And some of our family members are breast cancer survivors. I wouldn't have minded posting my underwear color LOL.

If you want to promote TRUE cancer awareness, encourage women to go braless.

hey guys,
i do apologize for supposedly ruining the facebook game, but if you think about it, the only way for this fun underground trend to actually benefit breast cancer and add awareness to the issue is for it to eventually come to light. it's not just a secret game between you and your facebook friends, the really awesome thing about something like this is that people start searching to figure out what it is, find sites like ours, and hopefully(!) that's the point of the whole process, ya know?
what i'm curious about is the origin of the whole thing and if there's some sort of organization that is perhaps taking donations for the cause so that people who find out the point of the game can then perhaps contribute some funds -- anyone know?

you guys are taking this way too seriously...who cares if the bubble was burst? is all you have in life the suspense you have over your "friends" on facebook. please. you think that the single "what does that mean?" comment they leave really is keeping them from sleeping at night?! if you didn't tell them i'm sure the next person did. this is a harmless write-up, grow up.

If they posted color and size, it would produce the maximum effect of the Breast Cancer awareness FB effort!

Yeah, it was fun while it lasted. Guys had started posting random, off the wall colors not even knowing what for. SCOOBY: if you really want to post the color of your drawers, do it in the name of prostate cancer! ♥

If for ten seconds it made one woman aware of breast cancer, job accomplished.
I watched my Sister fight her way through stage 4 breast cancer..she doesn't wear a bra, because she has no breasts, but she is alive! As her husband said,"I love you for you, not because of your breasts!" Hats off to everyone on facebook! I hope it continues every month for one year..and yes, include the men, they get breast cancer too!

Not sure about all of the emails...but as far as the one I received and I sent out...we had a link to direct ladies to www.feelyourboobies.com. This is a website that aims to remind and encourage women to do their monthly self exams by...well, feeling their boobies. I'm proud to say that a very large number of my girl friends posted their true colors yesterday!!

My mom is a cancer survivor 3x and she has no boobies so she posted "transparent" as her color of choice :)
