It can get cold in the depths of the ocean, which is why it's always a good idea to bring a hat. Even if you don't have a head. Or a body. For some reason I get the feeling that this thing could kill a man. Anyone know what it is?

It's a Crossota norvegica jellyfish from the depths of the Arctic Ocean, discovered by NOAA, reported by National Geographic News, along with a bunch of other strange critters from the deep: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/12/photogalleries/091211-alien-jellyfish-pictures-arctic/index.html

It's the deep-sea jellyfish known as the "red paper lantern medusa".
It lives too deep to come into contact with humans, but it's probably safe to assume that touching it will turn you inside-out.
