The year proved that the Internet's favorite tool -- and the quickest way to get your 15 seconds of fame online -- is Photoshop. Why? Photobombers. After the Crasher Squirrel (see: Meme of the Year) made his unexpected appearance in a photo, the Internet went wild placing him into other scenes. This act brought back the already-popular act of photobombing, where a picture-perfect image is ruined either in the moment -- by something going on in the background (or foreground) -- or after the fact, using image-editing software. But the fun didn't end there.

And the nominees for Best Photoshop Trend of 2009 are ...

aretha's hat

Aretha's Hat

The date was January 20, and history was being made in the nation's capital at Barack Obama's swearing in as the 44th president. But it was Aretha Franklin's bodacious, jewel-encrusted bow hat that would steal the show. The Internet, constitutionally predisposed to focus on minute, absurd details of anything, had a field day Photoshopping her hat onto Obama, Ben Franklin, Disaster Girl and just about everyone else.

barack obama photoshops

Barack Obama

It's been a long year for President Obama, who must be pretty tired of getting Photoshopped into every other historical figure ever at this point. This was actually started by the nation's magazines, which after the election transmogrified Obama into every other consequential American president of the 20th century and put it on their cover. Obama was pictured as JFK, FDR, and Lincoln. Then came the release of the new "Star Trek" movie, and people couldn't help but notice that the new president shared some striking similarities to Spock.

crasher squirrel

Crasher Squirrel

Melissa Brandts and her husband were taking a hike at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Canada, when they set up their camera on an automatic timer to take a nice shot of them in front of the lake. Then a squirrel popped into the camera's field of the vision, and when the shudder clicked, a piece of brilliance was born. The squirrel had 'photobombed' their shot -- a maneuver typically practiced by lame dudes at bars -- and the Internet was quick to act on the spontaneous creation. A wave of 'squirrelbombings,' or Photoshopping the squirrel in question into other situations, broke out almost immediately, and soon the squirrel was crashing stars on the red carpet, world leaders and historical scenes, among much more ridiculousness.

Interrupting Kanye

When rapper Kanye West stormed the stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, grabbed the mic from Taylor Swift and cried, "I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," he probably didn't realize that he was giving birth to a Web meme that would take over the Internet for well over a week. Soon his words, slightly altered, were being put into dialogue boxes above all manner of historical and fictional events. Kanye was interrupting the moon landing, George Washington crossing the Delaware River, and many, many other significant events.

kate gosselin hair

Kate Gosselin's Hair

The internet loves the absurd, and when confronted with the bizarre spectacle of 'John and Kate Plus 8,' chose to focus on one ever-present detail of America's favorite family trainwreck: Kate Gosselin's signature "reverse mullet." Think it looks good on her? Check it out on a cat.
