Cats rule the internet. Think about all the funny cat photos and videos that infest your IM conversations, Facebook walls and e-mail forwards from mom -- our feline overlords have sneakily solidified themselves as a staple of the interweb humor we love so dearly. Don't believe us? Salon and Entertainment Weekly have also had the same startling realization. Heck, we even awarded them with a lifetime acheivement honor in the 2008 year-end Urlies. But whether you're a bona fide cat lady who loves it all, or someone who can't stand the over-population of cats on the interwebs, we can all agree that cats need a break. Urlesque hears your cries for help.
After getting inspired by our friends at Asylum, Urlesque is organizing a web-wide ban on cat-related coverage on 9.9.09 -- A Day Without Cats on the Internet. Why only one day? Well let's be honest, that's probably only as long as we'll last before a hilarious video comes crashing into our inbox. But for one day, we will abstain... for you... for the cats. Several of our friends across the web have bravely agreed to stand up beside us and support the effort: besties such as Asylum, Best Week Ever, Dumb As A Blog, Lemondrop, PawNation, PetSugar, Popbytes, PopEater, The Presurfer, Rocketboom, Snuzzy, Tosh.0 Blog, ZooBorns, Zoomdoggle... do you think you could handle the challenge? (Update 9/4: 11 more sites have joined the ban including I Has A Hot Dog, Laughing Squid and NPR! And the Wall Street Journal has taken notice of our movement. Update 9/8: 15 more sites have joined the ban including Cute Overload, and we've had more media coverage including MSNBC and more!) See the final ban list for participating sites.
Do you want to join the ban? Sign the "petition" to show your solidarity or send us an e-mail.
During the day of the ban, Urlesque is taking things one step further. We will blogging exclusively about an animal of YOUR choosing! It's up to you, Internet, to pick which other furry friend you'd rather read about on 9.9.09. Vote in the poll below. The poll

I'm so torn between bunnies and rodents at the moment that I keep voting for both.

You've got to be kidding me!
The internet is mostly full of porn, but you don't see A Day Without Porn anytime soon.
Like porn, cats are a vital part of the internet. Take cats away from the internet, even for a day, and you might as well just google Google.

Worth mentioning is the parasite (protozoan Toxoplasma gondii) that has a symbiotic relationship with the cats and infects humans brains. This then effects out behaviour and society at large.

This post makes me very sad.
It makes me want to put my tiny paws over my nose, or even to stretch very far up, and put them on someone's knee while looking imploringly at them with enormous green eyes, begging for a consoling skritch behind the ears, and a little bit of that ice cream.
I feel that perhaps I have stumbled (we don't stumble, but you know what I mean) on an incidence of failed human training, or even some poor feral human raised without proper socialization.
Cats of the internet, we *can* prevent tragedies like this.
Blog. Blog as you've never blogged before. The humans are counting on us to save them.

New write in candidate: Ducks!
According to the Laugh Lab (http://laughlab.co.uk/), ducks are the funniest animal. So a day without cats might give them the opportunity to take over the internet! If not ducks, then at least llamas. Who doesn't love the Llama song?
