Depending on the camera, it could have been set to continual focus it will keep on focusing until the shutter is pressed all the way, even when using the timer. So it is absolutely possible that the squirrel is in focus and the background is out of focus.

What's wrong with you people? This animal is quite obviously an Asian Elephant - note the smaller ears as compared to its African relative.
Sarah... what grade did you get on that paper?

You can tell by the way they are laughing, they could see the results of this picture coming. That is too funny. I believe it is real, even if not focused correctly.

I think you can tell by the way they are laughing, they could see what the end result of the picture was to come. I believe it is real, and the best photo bomb I have seen yet. Too funny.

It's a martian come to steal our precious moments and work into our psyche by creating dissent on the proper way to address a rodent.
I agree about the camera focus being on the 'martian-planted squirrel, instead of the couple in the background. However, I am ignorant of modern-day camera technology, having owned SLRs for over 25 years. My opinion then is not techno-updated.

There's more to the story - turns out that animal was not in the foreground but sitting beside them. All that was found later at the site were human remains and the camera. there has been a massive cover up.

It's a marmot you varmints; Checked with Yosemite Sam. Elmer Fudd approves of that ID.

Regarding focus........camera focused on the closet object to the lens....It is a squirrel, not a prairie dog, or alien....
