What Is That? Giant Crab Monster Will Haunt Your Dreams

Greetings intrepid readers and amateur detectives. We don't know what these things are (we just know where to find them), so put your sleuthing skills to good use and help us out. What is this? Where did it come from? And what is it doing here? Tell us everything you know.

Some images stick with you forever. And since finding this one on the Google one day (no idea how THIS came up in my search) I just can't get this monster out of my head. And some poor guy can't keep it out of his garbage can. WHAT IS IT?!

Above poster is correct. I saw mine while stationed on a military base in the middle of the Indian Ocean! The British Indian Ocean Territory of Diego Garcia is home to British & American forces & is accessible only with the permission of those governments militaries permission.

The coconut crab is under protection of the crown & harassing or killing them is punishable by fine of up to $1500 (or so we were briefed), consequently, they ARE very tasty when grilled!

Coconut Crab...got the name because they can crack open coconuts with their pincers.

From what I've read they're docile and harmless unless provoked. Go to google images and type in coconut crab...there's a picture of a guy letting one crawl up the side of his torso.
