Last week, a bat clung to the Discovery space shuttle as it blasted off from Kennedy Space Center. Despite their hope that the little dude would "wake up and fly away before the shuttle engines ignited," NASA staffers confirm that the animal likely perished quickly as the Discovery climbed into the sky.

From now on, whenever we look toward the stars, we will think of Space Bat and this epic tribute video.
