According to legend (and this article), tractor square dancing started in the 1950's as a one-time event in Nemaha, Iowa, and consisted of "old fashioned tractors going axle to axle in a chorus line, creating a slow and boring dance."

In fact...

The partners work together to coordinate their calls in unison. It's a true demonstration of teamwork.

They usually have a given name for their tractors and make up characters for the drivers.

While the marriage of sluggish, repetitious dance moves and giant farming equipment (with names!) doesn't necessarily equal a rip-roaring good time, the videos below are, nevertheless, unarguably hypnotic. Understanding that plenty of time and focus (and make-up, considering that some of the farmer dudes dress up like ladies for the event) surely went into making sure that these tractors do-si-doed and promenaded in unison is enough, in and of itself, to get us to Nemaha, Iowa's next county fair. Yee-haw!
