According to Wikipedia, an Elizabethan Collar is "a protective medical device worn by an animal [meant] to prevent the animal from biting or licking at its body or scratching at its head or neck while wounds or injuries heal."
According to the rest of us, it's a cone.
And it's okay to get a kick out of the sight of it, if only because it's working in the dog's benefit.

We're pretty sure that the dog in that last picture looks uncomfortable for a reason other than the big plastic cone around its neck.
