Right now there is an epically long paper roll in Argentina that artists from the UK, the USA and Japan have already covered tastefully with food from their countries as part of the Worldwider Food project. The guidelines for the project are simple --
- you must use food in your work
- your work must take place on the paper roll
- after you're done, you must send the paper roll to an artist in another country who then adds to it
As this piece is sent around it will get older and some work may even start to mold. A project with an expiration date some might say.The Worldwider Food project is just the grossest of the many paper rolls, or "strands", currently circulating under the Worldwider banner, a grandly scaled collaborative mail scheme that seeks to give young artists a voice while exploring their culture through their art -- be the medium paint, embroidery or (in the case of the Food strand) spaghetti.
Other paper rolls in mailboxes now include...
- The creepy Worldwider Admirer, where artists send what look like blood splattered ransom notes to the artists they themselves idolize and mysteriously want to freak the f*ck out

- The Worldwider Battle Roll, where the "artist builds an army of characters on the Roll of Paper and then challenges [another] artist to a battle." So like Fantasy Football, but for doodlers.

- And Worldwider Fax, where artists across the globe take pause to ask each other, "Fax machines! remember those?"

Check the Worldwider blogspot to track the progress of your favorite paper roll. For example: Catriel Martinez from Argentina JUST finished his square of paper roll on the Food strand, guys. Ogle his highly caffeinated work out NOW.
