"You can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends" is an old adage that applies even in the animal kingdom.

Take the case of Pingu, for example. Pingu is a baby penguin who was born with a brother so greedy that he refused to share more than a few drops of fish with Pingu. Eventually Pingu grew to be so much smaller than his brother that zookeepers were forced to separate Pingu from his family so they could feed the little guy and get him healthy again.

The problem was, poor Pingu got lonely. He was only three weeks old and he missed his family (even though they stole all his food). The zookeepers needed to step in and do something: A lonely baby penguin is almost worse than a malnourished one. Thankfully. help came in the form of a couple of $6 stuffed toys, with whom Pingu has been reported to snuggle all day.

He's eating well. He's moved up from liquid fish to real ones, and soon enough he'll be back with his real family again. Let's just hope he doesn't forget about the friends he made along the way.
