These days, it's the Disney Channel's pool of underage, robotic talent that seem to garner the most attention (and net the most profit) from "the kids." From The Jonas Brothers to Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus to A-lister Shia LaBeouf (who sharpened his skills on the net's Even Stevens), the kids are doing quite alright. But it was just over a decade or so ago when folks now of a certain age (like, 21) preferred orange couches and green slime to giant mouse ears. Nickelodeon undoubtedly helped shape a generation of "wild and crazy" kids obsessed with summer camp, obstacle courses and saving the planet. The network, dare I say, prided itself on quirk and an audience of kids who liked to play, whereas modern Disney fare seems hellbent on introducing "kid-ults" who dress like grown-ups and leak dirty self-portraits (consequently, Clarissa really did know it all, including how to not let that happen).
The folks at Still Not Old -- a blog that philosophically waxes nostalgic for contemporary classics on the lower rung of the cultural matrix -- take us through a history of Nickelodeon's "bumpers," or the short videos that would play between programming and commercials. They were -- needless to say -- pretty bizarre, not unlike a significant amount of Nickelodeon's programming (Pete and Pete were, for example, pretty far from Marc Summers and that lady Robin...although that's all apples and weirdass oranges). But most noticeable is the playful, joyfully odd aesthetic that these bumpers emote, something so obviously absent from Raven Symone's cheesy double takes.- link:// Still Not Old
