Viral videos usually involve cats, gaffes and children singing, but the viralsphere got a little heavy this week. In the past few days we've seen videos of enhanced interrogation, bribery, press manipulation and a dude who got his sandals glued to the floor and spilled his milk. Now that was funny!
- First, the following footage surfaced of the CIA interrogation of then-16-year-old Canadian Omar Khadr at Guantanamo Bay. Khadr has been held at Gitmo for five years, accused of killing an American soldier with a grenade in Afghanistan. The video shows him being questioned by a good-cop interrogator who offers him a chocolate bar while Khadr sobs, complains of inadequate medical care and appears disoriented. Continuing the media offensive, this lawyerly gentleman stripped down to his tighty whities on behalf of the Guantanamo detainees. If the pants don't fit, you must...oh nevermind.
- Then there was the grainy tape of Bush lobbyist Stephen Payne hustling for a hefty donation to the Bush Presidential Library from a guy he thought was a representative of exiled Kyrgyzstan President Askar Akayev. Turns out he was really talking to an undercover journalist. The lobbyist promises that in exchange for a $250,000 donation (plus $100k for himself) he can provide access to top Bush Administration officials, including Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice. And you thought the Clinton Library was shady!
- Finally, this video shows John McCain's press people and a St. Louis news team getting into an argument over camera angles and pre-approval of shots for a McCain interview. Throughout the campaign, McCain's press aides have tried really hard to squash shots of the left side of their candidate's face, which is puffy and scarred after several invasive surgeries to remove melanomas. Meanwhile, the Obama media team has gone to great lengths to create heart-warmingly diverse tableaus behind the Senator during his speeches, minus, of course, any Muslim women in heard-scarves. Ain't politics grand?
