YouTube's favorite son, street-brawler Kimbo Slice, made his network television debut Saturday night in a Mixed Martial Arts fight aired on CBS. Over the past few years, Kimbo's built an online resume as the People's Champion of bare-knuckle, winner-take-all parking lot brawls for $25. Recently he's been scooped up by upstart MMA promoter EliteXC and has been transitioning to the 'mainstream.' We support him in all his endeavors, especially if they continue to create the kind of brilliantly awkward network television that was on display Saturday night. It was straight-up bizarre to watch CBS wheel out part of its sports broadcast A-team, March Madness play-by-play man Gus Johnson, to try to legitimize the blatant ratings grab. Here's a video of of the third and final round of Saturday's fight (warning: blood at the 0:40 mark):

Gus Johnson: How do you guys have this one scored?
Other guy: (Laughing) I have no idea, I have no idea...
You can't blame poor Gus for asking - MMA does have standard judging criteria, but they often take a backseat to calls for knockout blood, especially when Mr. Slice is involved. The network platform meant that the fight had to be stopped when his opponent's grossly inflated ear "popped." As the crowd booed for more, faceless CBS suits cringed, and the dazed challenger slapped the ref in the face because he wanted to keep fighting. Good times all around.

In another development, we've just received word that Corey Worthington has been named the successor to Katie Couric as anchor of the CBS Nightly News.
