The season four finale of 'The Office' broke out the fireworks last night, but we could barely keep things straight what with all of the webbiness going on. For those who are somehow out of the loop, Ryan, former temp at the Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin, became his branch's boss due in large part to a plan to expand into online social networking (fauxmercial above).
Ryan's brainchild was immediately infested with sexual predators, and it didn't really improve sales either. Ryan decided to solve that problem by double booking IRL sales as website sales, and it caught up with him last night in the form of an arrest for fraud. The show's characters found out by watching a piece of citizen journalism on YouTube, naturally, but we prefer this video of the scene that recreates the YouTube page actually IN the scene.
All this net-savvy completely fits the show about small town office life, owing mostly to the nerdiness of its audience and the fact that it's usually spoofing internet absurdity anyway. The writers, actors and producers get in on the act too -- the live blog of last night's episode by writer/actor Paul Lieberstein and the blog Creed Thoughts are two of many examples. Also note that there are real, hilarious websites for Dunder Mifflin (an all-too-rare .biz, complete with corporate memos) and Dunder Mifflin Infinity, which has actually become a social network, albeit of huge fans who complete various tasks as members of fictitious DM branches. So goodbye Toby, and goodbye Office... the internet can't wait to welcome you back for Season 5.
